From my understanding you are offered bond at let's say 100,000...you have to put all of that down, or in some cases they will put a lien on your property for that amount, if you have equity.

If the magistrate doesn't release you on a promise to appear and instead sets a dollar amount of bond, it can either be cash only or corporate surety. I was allowed to pledge my house, which was worth less than the bond once you subtracted the mortgage, but they accepted it anyway. I signed a paper agreeing to forfeit the property to the government if I violated the terms of the bond, which were only to stay in that judicial district, avoid any new criminal cases and show up at all my court appearances. No lien or other paperwork was filed and when I was sentenced, the bond was cleared.

The bigger problem was all of the additional conditions put on by pretrial services, which is a probation office for all of the "innocent until proven guilty", sure, folks.

Federal orders of release usually allow for a personal recognizance bond (no money at risk, a promise to appear), an unsecured bond (money at risk, but not posted and only after violation of release condition), or a secured bond (a set amount that must be posted in its entirety, by only a percentage, or by property in the full amount or the percentage). Bail bondsmen, if approved, are allowed to "write bonds" in federal courts.
