SPRINGFIELD – State prison officials have put Menard Correctional Center on lockdown after an outbreak of violence within the maximum-security facility.

An Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman said a guard had to fire a warning shot when two inmates wouldn’t stop fighting Wednesday.

“There were no reported injuries. The incident is under investigation,” said spokeswoman Kayce Atayiero.

In a lockdown situation, inmates are held in their cells and no visitors are allowed in the prison.
