Exclamation Smoking Will Be Banned at all NJ State Prisons!

Hi everyone!

Last night my man told me they just received notification that cigarettes will no longer be available to purchase through commissary effective in the next few months. No exact date was given. ALL smoking is being banned at state prisons!

Oh boy! There will be a lot of unhappy/grouchy/unruly inmates coming up soon! I don't know how they can do this! Ugh!

Good luck D.O.C.! You WILL have your hands full!

Yep! My man said look out for riots. He said that it begins in about 3 months but if you have cigs after it goes in effect that there's a grace period until their cigs are finish...

we'll see...

This has been happening for several years across the country. With time they'll get used to it.

They will get used to it especially if they do any time in the county jails where they are not allowed to smoke at all.
It is ashame though they take so much away from them so here is another.

From a couple of County facilities I have seen in the past year that finally got around to banning tobacco, do not expect the sale to actually continue for the 90 days...I saw one County in north Texas last year where sales quit inside of a month from the announcement.

Sales within the prison system itself were stopped 15-20 years ago (I believe it was circa 1995 but could have been a year or two earlier). Was nice not having my porter coming in smelling like an ashtray...

I felt bad for the inmates at first too, but when my son was in the county for four months, he said "I"m sure I'll get at least four months added to the end of my life now that I've quit smoking".

He hasn't started back up, either.

It could be a positive for some.

I still feel sorry for the mentally ill inmates though, I think they'll have the hardest time abstaining.

that will be okay as long as they don't look outside and see the guards smoking. I think it is not the place to ban it, but DOC does what they want!

I think it is a great idea to ban smoking in prisons. Secondhand smoke kills. No one should have to breathe in that poison.

They can buy Niccorette losengers. My son is at Southern State and he just got his. Can buy two every two weeks. They are 40 something dollars. He got his second box and stuck it away for when it starts. They cannot buy it from canteen. They have to put in a business remit and they will deduct it from their money

Wow! $40!!!! That's a lot of money! What if they don't have someone on the outside who sends them money? And they can't afford to buy them? Then what? They make everything difficult! Good luck to your son trosa! Luckily my Doc doesn't smoke much! He smokes 1-2 cigs a day. He will be fine.

BTW, they are also going to make the C/O's and administrative staff stop smoking on the grounds. The C/O's are making a big stink about it so it appears that they may postpone the date of the smoking ban.

Good luck to all!
