Hardest thing to explain to those that have been down 10+years

GPS!!! I moved last year to the city nearest the prison where my husband was transferred - He's been down 18 yrs now.. and I was explaining when he called me I was trying to use the GPS on my phone because I didn't know how to get to the street I needed to get to.. He was blown away that my phone could tell me where I was and how to get to where I was going and would speak the directions to me.

My husband says the same thing to me.. "why don't people just talk on their phones now?? I just don't get it!" He doesn't either!!

I was explaining the voxer app. Which is like texting but like voice messages. He's like so you just leave voicemails back and forth, why not just call. I said well I like it cause instead of texting I can just talk into it and it will send out the message. No more trying to text with one hand

Well my man has only been locked up for about 5 and half years so far but when ever something new comes out he is always telling me things about it because of the commercials he sees on TV. He gets it in his head that if he sees something on TV everyone must have it already and I'm like honey, that stuff is expensive! I can't afford a .... on my budget! He's always telling me I should get this or that app on my cell phone. Smart phones weren't out back when he went in and when I ask how he knew about this or that he'll say I saw it on "The Big Bang Theory" or some other show. He seems to know more about what my phone will do than I do! I don't watch TV and especially I mute commercials. He's only had a TV for about 6 months (I insisted he get one so that he wouldn't lose touch with the world) and he's already becoming a real know it all because he saw it on TV. I have to laugh.

My hubby has been down over 16 yrs. and I have tried to explain facebook to him, how many things are automated and you don't talk to people. I told him how I pay for my gas without going into the store and pay bills over the internet and how I transfer money from one account to th other using my cellphone or the computer. It just freaks him out! When he went to prison 55 mph was the fastest you could drive on the interstate, now it's 70 mph. He is amazed at all the changes.

My husband has been in 17yrs and he has a tv I purchased for him soley for his sports & news. Otherwise he refers to television as "the idiot box" lol! However commercials and news provide technology info and he too is amazed by all of it. I go NO place without my iPhone, travel with my iPad and laptop. If something new comes out I just send him the feature story in the newspaper so he feels connected to society and understands how I manage my life and the tools I use & the world we live in.

It really trips me out to think that my love has never seen a flat screen tv. Once during visits when we took pictures he was all excited like "check it out baby, they have this little machine they put the camera on it and it PRINTS OUT THE PICTURES LIKE PICTURE PICTURES!!!!" I was like... I'm sorry baby those have been around a while... He was like "WHAT?!" He also doesn't understand why in Long Beach there is a plastic bag ban and we have to use reusable bags when we go shopping. He was confused, "What if you have to buy a lot of groceries?" Blade less fans... iPods... He's like, "When I get out i'm gonna get a badass CD player for the car!" I said, "My love... I have an iPod connector for the car..." He just said, "I don't care! I want a CD PLAYER!"

I can't wait to buy him an iPhone!

I remember reading an article about a guy who had been down for awhile. After his release He was somewhere where he saw someone using a key card to get into a room and he thought they were thieves trying to break in.

Mine told me he was in the prison auto shop mulling around and watching another inmate working on a car. He asked him if they still made cars with spark plugs.

The best one though was when we were talking about adult toys...he was describing what he remembered them looking like etc....I said "No sweetie...they do everything but talk now."

Oh I almost forgot when we were talking about his daughter bday present I said let's get her a tablet. He said baby we need to get her more than paper why are u being so cheap!!! Lol
He also was freaked out that I could find him through his phone with GPS he said so u can know where I am at all times? :-)

he saw a news article about some facebook page of an organization getting one million "likes" we were at visit and his face was priceless!!! utter confusion with a hint of dissapointment and said " why in the hell would someone liking something make the news?" he was 100% right but I couldnt stop laughing

laughing after reading more of what's posted. I was explaining SKYPE & TANGO to my husband last night. So he says "now you have no reason to leave the house" lol! I can see whoever I talk to on the phone or ipad, or laptop, I do my shopping, pay bills on line, I never have to remember anything because I store it on anyone of my many apps on my iphone, my hubbie said why bother having a brain. hahahaha.....
