Default Proxy marriage in Colorado

Well, I'm casting my line, hoping someone has some information! I am getting married to my fiancee, who is in Colorado. He is an inmate, and they only do proxy weddings. I am from out of state, and I am hoping maybe someone has been married by proxy and has some advice/resources? Also, the state of Colorado is one of the few states that offers "self solomnization" (where there is no wedding officiant). Also wondering if anyone has done this?! Any information on either of these topics would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there!! I can help you with your questions. I got married in Denver, CO buy proxy. My Husband and I live in Oregon. Everyone at the licensing office and courthouse were so nice. You will need a valid form of ID for fiance. You can go online and get the paperwork that is needed. I would suggest having a judge marry you. They turn in all the paperwork and it only cost me $25 and the judge was very nice. The hardest part for me was finding a proxy, but I did get one. Hopefully you have a friend or family member that will help you with that. If you have any further questions PM me and I will try to be as helpful as possible!!

I too was married by proxy but in Texas. It was a very easy process for me to do. I know a lil information about the four states that do proxy marriages. Send me a pm and I'll do my best to help you.

I read ur post and I was a proxy bride. My ceremony took place in CO. There are 4 states that recognize proxy marriage CA, CO, TX, MT. CA only does it for military ppl. My gf lives in CO and she was my husband's proxy. I had to type a power of attorney form for my husband to sign and get notarized. Rachel at the Denver's clerk office was nice. Judge Madden performed my ceremony, he's sweet and will respond to your emails. His fee is $25.

Wow, thanks for the responses! I was leaning towards the self solmonization, as it seemed easier, but the proxy ceremony seems a little less anticlimactic. So, I'd prefer to do that. So your responses illicit more questions! Here goes!

My fiancee is in Sterling. JW_Wife you mentioned Judge Madden, is he in Denver? If so, does anyone know if you can marry outside of the county your fiancee is incarcerated, or do I need the ceremony to take place in the county he is incarcerated in?

I am not from Colorado, and I am drawing a blank on a proxy. I have been kicking around the idea of perhaps hiring an ordained minister as his stand in. Anyone have any other suggestions? Because I have an extremely conservative family and job, I've made the choice not to tell my friends or family about my impending marriage. Perhaps someday, but for now, my double life continues...My fiancee knows the ins and outs of my family and he agrees I should at least wait to tell them until after we get married. We've been together going on 4 years!

To clarify, is it necessary that his proxy have POA? If so, how do you terminate the POA upon conclusion of the ceremony?

Want to say thanks for your responses. I'm visiting him in 5 1/2 weeks, and I am trying to do the ceremony when I go down there.

You can get married in any of the counties in Colorado, it is up to you. I got married by proxy in Denver, CO and my husband live in Oregon. You don't have to live in the state to be married by proxy. We chose Denver because there is a major airport there. There are a few judges that will perform the ceremony but you will have to find your own proxy. Does he have any family that could stand in? Judge Madden is in Denver, he is the one who married us as well, real nice guy. The ceremony is nothing like a wedding. He looks over the paperwork, asks you that you want to marry your fiance, asks the proxy if your fiance has given that permission to stand in and then says congrats, your married. Took about 5 minutes. As far as the POA is concerned it is NOT a general POA it is only so that person can sign their name on the marriage license for your fiance nothing else. I found my proxy on PrisonTalk, she was also wanting to get married and we made arrangements to meet. I just posted a thread and she responded, you might try that as many of us know how family can be and are more than happy to help. I also PM'd you the forms you would need. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!
