Default He asked for money for a TV and sneaks

He gets some money every month that comes in my name, but is for him. So he knows there is money available. He asked for a larger sum first though for a TV and sneakers. Does that mean he will have his own TV or just watching privileges? Should I ask this is the AZ forum, bc that is where he is. And sneakers? Do they give him just plain shoes, but he has to buy nicer ones?

Questions such as these would be better asked in the the AZ section. And suggestion to you would be to to learn as much as you can about AZ facilities; what's allowed, what isn't; what he can have, what he can't.

If he's asking for money for a t.v., then, typically, that means he'll have the t.v. for himself in his cell. He wouldn't be paying for t.v. privileges. And where my l/o is, when each inmate is processed into DOC, they are issued a pair of black prison boots. So if they want sneakers, they have to purchase them.

When he arrives, he has nothing....pair of pants, couple pairs of boxers and socks, 2 shirts, and shower shoes.

He needs to buy sneakers (@$20-30). The cheaper ones will fall apart if he works out in them. A TV will run $250 and it will be HIS tv, in his cell or on his bunk. He also has to buy headphones for the TV and eventually he will need more clothes. With summer, here, he may also be given a pair of shorts as well. HE WILL need sunscreen in "store". Also shampoo, soap, razors, etc. Paul had money set aside for all this, and when he arrived, he had $500 on his books, to get what he needed. Paul gets $30-50 or so a week, primarily for food and stamps. Some guys live off $20 a week. It's what you and he can afford. Fortunately Paul's parents cover his books for him. For me, visits and phone calls get to be expensive!!

I guess i need to look at a list of prices to see what everything is. dJ said he wants us to save whatever we can, but he also wants nice things.

Several months ago, I was able to scan and post the updated store list - I think you can access it through this link: http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/sho...8&postcount=10

Many of these are necessities (shoes, clothing, underwear, toiletries, etc.) and some of these are to make him more comfortable. Keep in mind that everything is cheap quality and won't last a terribly long time. The clothing falls apart after a few washes and the shoes wear out quickly. It does get expensive to support an inmate, but it's also important to send what you can comfortably afford.

Ok, I am changing this. Not nice things, I suppose but just standard? I am realizing that I have so much to learn. I thought he was being spoiled asking for so much money for this and that. Now I am learning these are for needed items that are crappy quality and need to be replaced often. So the money is necessary. What do ppl do who don't have any money?

Thank you for posting this! I need more time in my day just to read everything. I would like to be able to print things out and out in a file. It is so much easier that way.

What happens to the TV after he is released? Can they sell it to another inmate?

I think they can take all their stuff with them including the TV, but I know some guys leave their stuff behind for other guys who don't have that stuff. I had a friend who just got released and he left all his stuff for his buddies.

i don't know about everybody elses men but mine can eat like a horse. so the food they provide to them is not enough for him to not be hungry. so i send $40 a week just for his food, hygiene and writing supplies. then about every 6 months i have to send extra money for clothes and shoes. when he first went in i had been saving because we knew he would be going, i sent $750 and it got him everything he needed to be comfortable in there. i know not everyone can do it but i just think of it this way, do i want to be able to watch tv and eat and not wear the same clothes everyday...

My husband does too, he is always hungry!! I totally agree with you, I put 700 on his books the day he was sentenced and he got all he needed without asking for help and creating debt within. Then 40 a week for Food ONLY and thats phase 1! lol Phase 2 they are aloud to spend 80 a week on food. Thats gonna hurt the bank account a bit! I also send him an additional 2 to 3 hudred a month for hygiene, clothes, writing, ext.. very expensive but worth his comfort and mentality in there

This is something I was struggling with. I feel like it makes me sound heartless to say this, but I hope someone understands and won't judge me. When I started this thread, I was thinking, "wow he wants to live the good life while locked up and shouldn't he suffer a bit bc it is prison, afterall. Serves him right for doing what got him there and maybe if it is beyond horrible, he will make sure he never has to go back." and similar thoughts. I really didn't understand. I was thinking, "comfort? Why does he deserve to be comfortable. he's in prison! That is the whole point of it." (See why I feel horrible for such thoughts?) I am beginning to understand how some of these things are basic necessities rather than extravagant luxuries. I am also understanding that, even with a few extras, (TV or radio) that life still sucks for them. A few small comforts could go a long way in keeping their mental state healthy. Am I right? Am I understanding this a little better? Please don't think I am cruel and terrible.

In a letter, I asked my guy, why do you need a TV? and said, maybe that can wait. He wrote back, in all caps no less, that he needs a TV bc he wants to stay in his cell and stay out of trouble. I am so happy and so proud that he is trying to stay away from trouble and then I thought, OF COURSE he needs that TV.
