Default Sentences becoming ridiculous!

(Reuters) - Quartavious Davis is still shocked by what happened to him in federal court two months ago.

"My first offense, and they gave me all this time," said Davis, a pudgy African American with dreadlocks who spoke with Reuters at the Federal Detention Center in Miami. "Might just as well say I'm dead."

Davis was convicted of participating in a string of armed robberies in the Miami area in 2010. His accomplices testified against him, saying he carried a gun during their crimes and discharged it at a dog that chased them after one of their burglaries. But Davis was not convicted of hurting anyone physically, including the dog.

Davis would occupy no place at all in the annals of crime if not for his sentence. Now 20 years old, he was sentenced to 1,941 months - almost 162 years - in prison without the possibility of parole.

"....such sentences have been associated with an 800 percent increase in the federal prison population since 1980."

ayyyyup.

I know of a guy who got 214 years for similar to what he's charged with. (except no gun was ever discharged in that case).

Not to mention all the LWOP's for drug charges - including the one in my own family.

And Clarence Aaron - LWOP for conspiracy. Connecting a drug smuggler to someone who wanted to do business with a drug smuggler.

I know someone with offense similarities as well....no gun discharged...he was sentenced to 26 life sentences...
I know, the Clerance deal will stick with me FOREVER!!!
I'm sorry Susan that you have a family member serving life for a drug offense....those are the ones that really blow me away....just unbelievable.
BTW, FAMM is asking that we all write letters to the Sentencing Committee, asking for a two level reduction on drug charges.....just one step in the right direction.

One of the judges who sentenced my husband ended by saying " Mr. xxxx - Your life is over!" Haha. We showed him! Still together after all these years.

Wow, that's the right attitude from a judge. Unbelievable! I don't understand why they keep giving out these crazy sentences, they're obviously not working since crime rates are soaring in this country?!

OH THIS IS PITIFUL! I HATE TO READ THIS! My man is in federal prison for drugs and poss. of a weapon and he got 14 years. I wish there were laws that could be passed that would stop these horrible sentences. I pray that things will change! God bless the people behind bars!

WOW JUST WOW!!!!!! I thought my husband got the crap stick. I still think he did, but now I know he is no where alone in getting it and it wasn't because our judge was in a bad mood.

It's called the prison industrial complex. With the privatization of prisons spreading across the country, we now have created a number powerful corporate lobbying groups who are always pressing lawmakers to pass longer sentences and fighting any kind of prison reform (ie. sentence reduction) because more bodies and longer sentences mean more profits. The time being given is just out of this world crazy. But it feeds the prison industrial complex, and the complex needs to fed and like all good businesses, wants to grow and triple and quadruple... I was shocked to see the sentences people were serving. Shocked! People in federal prison with 5 or less YEARS were considered fortunate. There's no sense or rationale, unless you see the big picture - which is there's BILLIONS of dollars being spent and made off this.

That's beyond ridiculous! Gee I wonder why our prisons are so over crowded...let's hope the appeals process works on this one.

Not only are they hurting the inmates with these sentences, but the families who are giving their support and encouragement. Yes, prison is big business and the awards given to the judges and prosecutors for these convictions are unfair and making an uneven playing field. Shameful!

my husband was sentenced to 15 years agg. assault with a deadly weapon. No weapon in search. Officer admitted to this in trial. The man who my husband supposedly pulled a gun on while in his face could not describe the gun (because there wasn't one) nor could he point my husband out in the courtroom when asked to identify him. Yet my husband was found guilty. I have no faith in our justice system whatsoever.

This is sicking what's going on. While our county is in extreme debt we have 1.9 million in prison, jail, parol or probation for drug offenses. 1st time offenders are being sentenced to hundreds of years in prison for non-violent offenses. Our men and woman are being incarcerated for decades by Manditory Minumins or by Intimidating them in to plea agreements with the threat of long prison terms. All while costing the tax payers some 28 to 100 thousand dollars per year per inmate depending on their needs. That makes a whole lot of sence. Our Goverment officials governing these laws and our Criminal Justice system are a joke, not a very funny one though if I may add. Something has got to be done...as violent crime declines are prison population is increasing in staggering numbers.
