I'm new to Avenal. My fiance just transferred from Mule Creek and we are planning on getting married soon. Can anyone give me any info on what the procedure is for setting up the wedding, how many guests, does the officiant count as a visitor, do they take place in the visiting room or in the chapel? Any info is appreciated.

Your fiancee will have to request a marriage package from his counselor and then send it to you. Avenal has changed their procedure a little so from what I was told, the money is now taken out of the inmate's trust account (out of his books) this is information that was given to me on 4/21/12. Complete the packet and return to the address on the envelope. You are allowed 10 guest including yourself. The clergyman is not included. The marriages take place inside the visiting room and last anywhere from 5-7 minutes. Make sure anyone listed to attend your wedding has been preapproved or can get approval to attend the wedding. That's pretty much it, unless you have additional questions. Hope this helps!

I have submitted all of our paperwork for the marriage about a month ago now...do you know how long it usually takes for them to process the paperwork. I live in Idaho and he is in Avenal so its a little more planning than if I was near the prison. Do you know if they give you a couple weeks notice? Any info will help!

God Bless!

My husband and I are looking into possible places he might be transferred to in June and he heard that Avenal doesn't allow inmates to have electronics such as tv, cd player, radio, hotpot etc? Is this true or just a rumor?

Thanks!

Most of the buildings do NOT allow electronic devices that need to be plugged in (not battery operated)--there are a couple of buildings that are exceptions and allow those appliances. Inmates are also not allowed rechargeable batteries.

If you go on the CDCR site and look at the area regarding prisoner property, you'll find the exception granted Avenal allowing them to prohibit tvs, hot pots, etc. because they don't have the electric infrastructure to support them.

My hubby has his radio still but has to run it off of batteries that I send him in his QP. His tv, rechargeable batteries, and hot pot were taken from him when he arrived at Avenal from his transfer. There are some guys who have tv's that are run off of batteries (seems very expensive to me).

Wow, well Ill tell him not to put Avenal as one of his suggestions LOL. Thats crazy! They allow us to buy them these things but then dont give them a way to use them. Yup, sounds like CDCR!

Before you completely squash the idea of Avenal, I have to tell you that of all the institutions we've been at, Avenal has been the very best for visits and the most prompt in getting the inmates their mail and packages. Despite not having a tv, hubby and I are very thankful that he was transferred to Avenal.
