Default TV confiscated as a DR consequence?

According to a new rumor circulating, as of August 1 if someone gets a DR (write-up?)they will lose their TV's, have to re-earn the privilege of having one and also have to buy another one.

My husband is all stressed out about this and was wondering if anyone else had heard about it or have more info. He tries to stay out of trouble and has managed it so far, but is stressing about losing his TV if something happens.

I know if someone goes to the hole, their TV goes into storage along with the rest of their property but is returned after they get out. Don't see how they could keep them permanently, and seems a little harsh for just a write-up.

Anyway, does anyone have any info or input on this for me to pass on to him?

Just a rumor - - once an inmate purchases property, as long as it's allowed by the institution, the inmate retains the right to that property, although it could be held "on ice" for a period of time. Having a TV is a privilege that must be earned with a period of good time (i.e. no write-ups). So, what could happen is that the institution could amend the rule to not allow the inmate the TV for a period of six months after a write-up, (and that would count for CD players and some musical instruments, since they are all in the same "incentive" category) but I think that's unlikely to happen (although not totally impossible) for the same reason most things won't happen; "liability" - the institution's property room would have to assume responsibility for it during that time and the institution is dis-inclined to do that.

What definitely won't happen is the institution requiring the inmate to send out the TV and then re-purchase - since that would amount of a second level of "fine", and just wouldn't be realistic or practical. Remember that the institution doesn't normally adapt policies that will create much more work for the staff.

Inmates also don't really understand the correctional philosophy around TV's - in that the staff see them as "electronic babysitters" and frankly love that inmates have them. When a unit has a high percentage of inmates with TV's, there is less trouble - because of the competition for "choice seating" in the general TV viewing area, which is an ongoing source of fights and trouble.

Tell your husband not to stress about it - it's just a rumor.

I so completely understand...

I was attached to mine too - and still have it sitting in a little box in my closet, all these years later...

My husband said that it was in the newsletter that as of August 1, anyone who gets a DR will lose their TV for 6 months. Even tho' he's never had a write-up and doesn't plan to get one, he is still stressing about it.

Well, that's a great incentive to stay out of trouble... it's helpful for people to only stress about things they can actually do something about, otherwise - it's just stressing for the sake of stressing.

My response to folks who do that, (and I know quite a few) is simply to quote the great Dr. Phil line, "Wow - how's that workin for you?"

I couldn't agree more! My love and I have read so many books together - both before this 'experience' and now during.
