"they only serve a %age of their sentence and have long "back up", which I believe might be probation, some are paroled out..."
What is "long back up"? Yes, if I read the MDOC site correctly I believe he can be eligible for parole at 25% of the 10 years but doesn't mean he will get to leave at that time.

I can only imagine how much those phone calls mean to both of you.
I don't understand any part of his sentence....maybe his attorney can explain it to you...I know in some states, they only serve a %age of their sentence and have long "back up", which I believe might be probation, some are paroled out....but I am not familiar with the particulars. Someone does need to explain this to you...
I am praying that things work out quickly....and for the best, safest place for him to land....and close enough for visits!
Keep us posted....and maybe call the attorney for answers.
Love and prayers always,
XXOO

DANG....I just lost all the rambling I just wrote!! ?? Anyway, I think "back up" can be the time he receives as a suspended sentence...and kicks in if he does not comply with probation or parole....I've heard probation referred to as "on paper", or "back up"....it is ALL confusing to me...that is why I want you to get it from who ever KNOWS exactly what it is that your son is serving. It sounds encouraging that he can go up for parole at 25%! Does that mean 25% of 10 years? Like in two and a half years?...
My son is serving 85% of 10 years in the fed system...but he has 3 years probation following his release.
I hope I have not confused you more than you were before I started typing!!!
Let us know when you find out for sure what his sentence means...
Love and prayers,
XXOO

My son was transferred on Tues. from county to federal holding in Oklahoma. He's doing 42 months for selling drugs. Even though I knew they would eventually come to get him, I still blubbered like a baby. The last couple days-not so good. It helps to read all of your comments and realize there really is someone out there who knows what I'm feeling.
Now tonight he calls and informs me he's being sent to the Marion, IL a FCI (?) Never imagined how many abbreviations there are in the system. It's a former supermax converted to medium security. This is not sitting well with me..he was supposed to go to a camp. Not to mention I live in ND and what a trip it's gonna be! I'm nervous. Anyone know about this place? Will he ever get transferred closer to home?
Thanks to all of your comments..I'm not totally alone in all this.

Janeo701,

I'm so sorry. Yes, I do know exactly how you feel as other parents on here do as well. I try to prepare myself for different things but I still fall apart and have to regroup everytime a change happens. You are your son are in my thoughts and prayers. I can't remember each person/family by name but I ask God to remember "all of the parents and families that are apart of this site" because He knows each of us individually.

UPDATE-

My son was transferred Monday, 07/16/12, to Wilkinson County CWC (community work center) in south MS. Thank goodness he's in a CWC but we were not preferred for him to go south or be 3 hours away. I know it could be worse but we had been told 3 locations he would be sent to and all 3 were within an hour from my home. So needless to say we (I) were thrown for a loop. Trying to get my barrings again.

I pray this ends on a positive note and quickly for all of us on this site!

Welcome Janeo! I'm so sorry for your pain ...and you've come to the family you didn't know you had!!! You son is in the Fed system...and there is a forum you can get the particulars on his prison....Go to US FORUM, and scroll down until you see his prison name...or "other prisons" and you will be able to get the info from others...
I'm really sorry he is so far away....but in the Fed system...that is considered REALLY CLOSE....as far as not landing where the judge recommended is also unfortunately "normal"....the bop does whatever they want to do...and the judge has NO POWER over these matters. (I know this well, it happened to my son!)
Get the info you need....then come back to us(PWCIP)...and we'll get through this journey together!
Love and prayers,
XXOO
