Thumbs down Article: Fake electrocution of prisoner at Avenel--IA Investigation Results

Fake electrocution of prisoner detailed in internal Corrections Department report
January 23, 2010, 8:56PM
The Star-Ledger

One week before Javier Tabora’s release from the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, a specialized prison for sex offenders, he was summoned to an examination room. Once there, Tabora later told investigators, a sergeant instructed him to sit in an electronic chair used to scan inmates for contraband and pretend to be electrocuted. Tabora sat in the chair yelling and shaking, "pretending that electricity was coming from the chair," he said. Then he placed "cream soup" in his mouth and allowed it to seep out "for added effect."

The entire ruse was allegedly conducted to frighten a second inmate, Robert Grant, a sex offender with a history of mental health problems whom officers planned to question. In a separate interview, Grant told investigators he saw an inmate with "foam coming from his mouth" and then became "upset, nervous and shaking" when officers sat him in the chair while interrogating him.

Horrible. I hope those guards are not sent to SWSP. I fear what type of offender could be the next target to get information.
We need more cameras everywhere to protect everyone.
Hope the Ledger and the ACLU keeps up investigating abuses in the system.

That is absolutely horrible. That is pure mental torture and abuse and exactly what the American soldiers were court marshalled for at Guantanamo Bay...

Are we living in the Dark Ages? Or is this freakin' 2010?!?!?!?!?!? OMG!!! I can't believe this happens. And of course inmates who are treated this way do not file complaints because they are afraid of the treatment they will receive going forward! I know that these inmates are serving time for crimes, but we do not have to treat them like animals. They are still human beings. And some of them at Avenel have mental illnesses. And then it sounds like the old who do you believe an inmate of the guard scenario! Sheesh! I'm so disgusted!

What I really loathe is the abuse of authority! These guys should be fired and there should be cameras everywhere!
