From the BOP's page for FCI Terminal Island

It doesn't surprise me since the bop will always default to a position that is hardest on prisoners instead of just using effective cleaning of the phones between calls. Disinfectants work, but they are usually treated as contraband by the bop.

This seems very harsh and punative. I agree they could wipe and disinfect keyboards and phones after every use. Its the cost of a few packs of disinfectant wipes per day. Instead thye are putting in measures to isolate inmates and separate families.

But who would you expect to clean the devices? Staff doesn’t have time and you can’t rely on all inmates to take it seriously enough to do it.

Oh, I dunno, seems to me like BOP Staff would have some idea of which inmates are most reliable to do a job 100% and which inmates would not. With visits already suspended & the fact that BOP does not have video visits, taking phone and email access is over the top cruel & unusual IMHO.

I think the BoP AND other inmates would see this as giving an inmate some authority.

I can see the inmate waiting for the phone getting testy when told they had to wait - inmates can be hostile when given orders. Not all, but some and with nerves on edge I fear that risk is higher.

Phone calls and emails are not a right; they are deemed a privilege and while I know first hand about not having them I can easily see how they both might be a source of contamination.

Iím not saying itís fun, easy or right - Iím saying do agree it is a quick reduction in avoiding spreading and right now I think thatís vital.

To avoid spreading of the virus is one thing, but keeping the mental health and status quo of inmates is another. And keeping that open communication with their families and loved ones helps with that mental health. The way that the bop is handling this whole virus epidemic will eventually cause the inmates to revolt. You can't keep taking things away from these people without expecting some sort of repercussions.

Once I accepted I was the only person in the BoP that cared about my mental health my time became less hard to cope with.

We got on it. The ACLU has taken up the case for Terminal Island and Lompoc. There are rumblings that the warden may or may not be replaced.
