I saw that the Regional Director came by. My son has been so upset. He can't sleep. Says the lights are on from 11:30 at night until about 3:00 in the morning. Also told me that the guards yell out between the dorms off and on all night. He says they have also changed the procedure for going to the pill window. He used to be able to go after lunch which worked out great because he needs to take his meds after a meal. Now they randomly call anytime between lunch and 3:30 p.m. He is usually trying to sleep because that has been so messed up. He told me that alot of grievance forms were filled out about the lights but were returned by the warden and said it was necessary because of security. I have spoken to someone I know who works for the TDC and was told that was ridiculous. He was also upset about the blanket issue. He has been trying to get a psych appointment but that seems to take forever. These problems did not seem to occur when the last warden was here. What is going on?
What's going on is this woman is a tyrannical, abusive control freak. She apparently comes from a maximum security unit and is hell bent on running this unit as a maximum security unit as well.
Her control tactics are designed to disorient and control. She has taken all the I-60's and grievance forms to prevent them from complaining to the Regional Director, which is why we must make the phone calls on their behalf, to let him know this crap is continuing.
These abuses are petty, though, compared to others that I hear are continuing. We need to keep watch over our loved ones, and when we know of abuses, please do not keep silent. Someone's loved one's life may be at stake. Do what you must to protect the identity of your loved one so that they are not the next victim of retaliation, but please do not keep silent.
This warden and her staff are out of control, and dangerous.
First let me say that I am new to the forums and this is my first post. I have been out of prison for a year and a half. I served the majority of my 6 years in prison at the Luther Unit...both inside the unit and at the "trusty" camp.
I recently recieved a letter from a friend who is still on the unit (at the camp) and he was explaining to me some of the change ups this new warden is instituting. It sounds like she is attempting to transform the unit, including the camp, into a maximum security prison....which is ridiculous.
My friend asked if people on the outside are making phone calls to complain. He suggested calling the Regional Director. Has anyone attempted this? Can I call the unit and make complaints on a prisoners behalf? What has been the general experience with this?
Welcome to the boards. We really appreciate your input here at the Luther threads.
Yes ... I know of *many* people on the outside who are making calls to the Regional Director's office about this Warden and her tactics. I've also been told that I-60's and grievance forms have all been removed and will not be provided because she does not want the Regional Director to receive notice of further complaints ... gosh ... I wonder why not? This has only helped fuel the calls to the Regional Director's office, and I'm told this is what precipitated the surprise visit by him.
I am convinced calls to the warden herself will do no good, other than to put your loved one on her retaliation radar. I have had only one general conversation with her, and she made it clear that she is the final authority on all things at Luther, she would honor no exceptions to her rules for any reason regardless of what the TDCJ rule book says.
I have credible reports of intense physical retaliation, particularly in Ad Seg, and I have concerns that people's lives may be in danger. I also have reports of increased petty and bogus cases along with increased verbal and psychological abuse. My suggestion is to do what you must to bring this to the light of day without identifying your loved one in any way. Make all the calls you need directly to the Regional Director, and voice your concern about potential retaliation against your loved one.
This is a minimum security unit ... there is no excuse or justification for this behavior from this woman.
I am very new at all of this. I want to do what is best to help my son. All I know for sure is that before this warden came, my son was doing well considering being incarcerated. He is very upset and says that there are more fights occuring because the men need to be able to get some sleep. He says the lack of sleep is causing everyone to feel so agitated and irritable. The overhead lights are driving him nuts. If I make a call, do I identify myself or my son. He says that many of the guards are acting very abusive too. It is amazing to me how one person has caused so many problems. My understanding is that Luther is a minimum security unit so why all the changes. I know that these men are very vunerable psychologically and anytime you turn everything upside down when it comes to their routine, they have alot of trouble readjusting. We need to stick together to help those we love.
The lights inside the Luther Unit are horrible and have been used for years, by various administrators, as a method of torture...seriously, what else can we call it?
While I was at Luther my family had to make a few calls to the Caprazono (sp?) the Reggional Director. I never suffered retalitation with the exception for one instance, and in that instance my Father called again, told the Regional Director that this would be the last call he would make, and that all future communication would be via attorney. After that, I never suffered retaliation again. Wardens, guards etc. are generally petty tyrants, bullies really, and when they get stood up to from the outside they tend to backdown...providing that the person standing up means business.
It seems that Luther changes wardens on a quite regular basis. I do not know if this is standard on other units or not. In my time at Luther the upper administration flipped at least 4 times in 5-6 years. The rumor when I was a prisoner was that Luther ends up with all the screw up upper administration from other places. A guard once told me that Luther ends up with the wardens and assistant wardens that have caused problems at other units. TDCJ seems to flush their trash down that Brazos River and it all ends up at the Luther Unit.
If it is true that there are no grievance or I-60 forms being made available by order of the warden then I would say this woman has really put her neck on the proverbial chopping block. These forms were instituted by federal order (at least that is my current understanding) and by policy must be available to the prisoner population. Guys can make I-60's on pices of paper and send them off the unit via "truck mail". I would suggest that family and friends hammer this point of no I-60's or grievances to the Regional Director. Also explain the escalation in tensions that this warden and her policies are causing. Most importantly, tell the Regional Director up front that it is your understanding that this warden is using retaliation tactics to deal with prisoners who complain and that you will not tolerate ANY such actions being directed against your family. Let the Regional Director know that if any such retaliation occurs you will involve an attorney immediately.

You are correct-There is no excuse for her! She needs more than prayers-I too have spoken with her and was told she had the last and only say that counts- My son was given 2 major cases along with minor cases from the same guard the same day. His grievances did nothing to help his cause nor did my conversations with her and her staff.
I called her for 2 weeks straight until she took my call- then I was told that my son was being transferred due to his status dropping from trustee to a G4 and they do not house G4. All of his privileges have been taken and he has landed in his new unit.
He went from the Trustee camp at Luther Unit to a G4 in Conelley! a maximum security unit to serve the 9 months remaining of a 2 yr sentence.
Crime= Contraband/ pornography = a picture of a women in skimpy bikini that came in from the mail room -she claims that the picture was nearly nude and that the offender is aware that these are prohibited and that the case will stand.
So please be cautious when contacting her or her staff for your loved ones- it may do more harm than help.
ok i am an officer at the luther unit if u have any questions or concerns u can ask me i will give it to u straight forward and as far as the I-60 and grievance thing they are avaliable upon request i do know that all the forms used in the prison system are made at the hobby unit in marlin and we have lots of forms for the offenders they just have to ask i do know that I 60s go quick cause u do have alot of offenders that take half a book of them we as officers get two large pads per hall way a day most of the officers are just too lazy to go upstairs and get them and as for the warden she is just doin what she is told i am not saying what ur loved ones are saying is not true but all prisons are supposed to be ran the same and there were alot of changes that did need to take place at the unit i have been there for a while and i have also worked at other units and believe me this is not the worst one i have seen or worked at and as for the petty cases we can not write a case unless it is justified all offenders are issued a hand book when entering the prison system and they must follow the rules and when they break the rules we are supposed to write them a case i usually give a warning and tell them to fix the problem and then if it is not fixed i talk to them and tell them what will happen and i get kiss my a$$ write it up i dont give a f*ck alot but then when they talk to the supervisors the whole story changes and that is not all of them but most of them
Okay i must side with you on this the woman is totally on crack hell I wish i had her connection it must be really good, anyways I speak to my Partner on a daily basis, and according to the grievance process there is none unless she decides its a good enough reason, as far as the prisons being ran the same way officer06 I'm not sure where you fall into place with the good, the bad or the power tripping guards, but there are some serious issues with Luther unit, there are certain Lieutenants, Sargent's and CO's that are legit and will point out the Oppressing Guards, but wrong is wrong and if you continue to look the other way or pick on certain Offenders because of race, sexual orientation or age then you are no different than those incarcerated, in short we all could use a break whether we are on the inside or outside God is my judge, jury and executioner not robocop
My boyfriend got his first disciplinary case in 4 years, for supposedly talking to someone in passing. Last week one of the guards was writing up everyone who took a spoon to the chow hall. There were about 50 writeups. In the most recent letter, he says that this week the heater that they use to wash dishes was broken, so now they were supposed to bring their spoons. Sounds a little screwed up. The guard said that she was TOLD to write up the inmates for the spoons by someone above her. How can you follow the rules if they change from week to week?
