Senate OKs 25-year sentences bill for sex predators

OLYMPIA -- The Washington state Senate Wednesday passed a law demanding heavier prison sentences for sex predators, including child rapists.

The Senate voted 45-to-one in favor of the House's main sex-predator bill of the session. The measure requires a prison term of at least 25 years for many sex offenders.

The House unanimously passed the measure earlier.

The Senate added one amendment that allows prosecutors and victims the discretion to seek lesser prison terms if that's more likely to lead to a conviction.

The bill was returned to the House for its expected concurrence, and it would then go to Governor Chris Gregoire for her expected signature.

It will take effect immediately upon her signature, applying to new prosecutions.

Teachers, coaches, clergy and scout leaders could face a minimum of 25 years in prison for raping or molesting a child under provisions of a bill passed by the state House and sent to the governor Saturday.

House Bill 3277, considered the centerpiece of the Legislature’s get-tough-on-sex-offenders bills, still gives prosecutors a lot of leeway in deciding whether to seek lesser sentences for sex predators who are related to their victims. But prosecutors would have to consult with victims and the victims’ family if they seek a lesser punishment, and only if they conclude they can’t prove the case against the rapist.
