Default Tablets and connectivity in California Prisons

"We’re trying to make sure that no matter where you are in a prison, you have connectivity. So our job is to figure out how to control it, because I want it available to every inmate, to every staff member, to every contractor or private company that comes in for any reason," Nichols said. "I believe it can help them do their jobs better. I believe it can create better public safety.” Read More..

Following the lead of states that already allow the use of tablets. Awesome.

I'm about as skeptical as they come, but even I have to admit there's a change in the air. Kudos to the justice reform advocates, the law makers helping to move CDCR into a positive direction and the folks inside who have continued to prove that rehabilitation is possible when given a chance.

The article says this is a vision or strategy so it's early and nothing concrete happening yet for inmates. It would benefit psychologically and help better prepare for outside when released. If abused there are obvious downsides and they would have to control that. I believe it would be a very good program. Benefits far outweigh potential downsides. Hope Nichol's idea gains traction.

You will all be happy to know that CDCR is starting a pilot program at a number of prisons with these tablets, that will be available through JPAY.

The pilot program will start sometime around March 1 at the select prisons. The tablets will have the capability to download movies, music, books, and the inmates will be able to send emails and send and receive short videos (30 seconds in length).

Check out the minutes from the last statewide IFC meeting for more details and information on the tablets and the pilot sites.

My hubby's prison is one of the pilot sites- SATF- and I just made a public records request for all of the information regarding the tablets. As I find out more, I will keep everyone informed.

The pilot facilities are:
SATF (Facilities A through G)
CIW (all yards)
CCWF (all yards)
High Desert (facility C only)
Kern Valley (facility C only)
The pilot is expected to last one to two years.
