Post BREAKING NEWS: Warden & Deputy Warden SUSPENDED at Arrendale Prison, Georgia!

Warden, deputy warden suspended at Arrendale prison

Lee Arrendale State Prison Warden Tony Turpin and the prison's deputy warden both have been suspended.

Georgia Department of Corrections spokesperson Scheree Lipscomb confirmed Wednesday that Turpin and deputy warden Johnny Huggins were suspended with pay pending an ongoing investigation by the DOC. She said both suspensions were effective Tuesday.

Lipscomb could not release further details of the ongoing investigation, but stressed that no criminal activity is suspected.

When asked if the suspensions were related in any way to recent litigation involving Turpin and LASP, or to the ongoing transfer of male prisoners to Washington State Prison in Davisboro, Lipscomb said "no."

"It's not related to the operations of the prison or any type of litigation involving the prison, or changes of the prison's mission."

Turpin has worked for the DOC for 24 years, and has served as warden at LASP since 2002.

While the suspensions are in effect, Lipscomb said Terry Duffy will handle the day-to-day operations at the prison on an interim basis.

She said Duffy has been with the DOC for several years, and previously has worked as the assistant regional director of the DOC's North Georgia Region.

"Mr. Duffy has worked his way up through the security ranks," she said. "He was the deputy warden of security at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, the largest diagnostic unit we have. He is quite familiar with the runnings of Arrendale, because he was the assistant regional director for the North Georgia regional area. Right now he is the head of the audit unit for the Northeast Georgia area, which inspects Lee Arrendale State Prison."

Turpin declined comment on Thursday.
