Default What types of magazines can I send to an inmate in Corrigan?

Are men's magazines allowed such as Hustler and Penthouse? I know that we can send them books directly from the publisher or Amazon; however, what type of books/magazines are allowed? Any info would be appreciated.

I know that Northern has had a pretty big change in what is acceptable; I believe that most of the "mens" magazines are currently not allowed. Actually, I do not believe that Hustler or Penthouse have been allowed for a VERY long time--and the 'softer' Playboy may currently be banned.

BUT--
After reading policy, I see that my suspicion is accurate; magazines/publications are reviewed by facility, so Northern may reject but Osborn accepts. Here is the policy. I think that your best bet is either have him find out, or call the prison directly. The other thing is that your man may want to talk with the other guys first--some magazines may be allowed but have a higher likelihood of having individual issues rejected, or sometimes that may take out certain 'offensive' materials. If this is always happening to one specific magazine, it may be more frustrating than helpful.

They can deny it when it interferes with 'legitimate penological interests' and since masturbation is strictly prohibited, well...

If you are looking for him to have pictures of beautiful women, sometimes you can be better off just going online and downloading pictures. You can even do a search based on the body type he prefers. As long as they are somewhat clothed and not engaged in any sort of sexual act, it will normally get through. My guy has liked this as 1) it's free, 2) he can name a celebrity/model/actress that he likes and I can find her and 3) when he has had enough of the picture, he can give them to someone else. Just a thought.

Good luck!

I know Radgowski (same location as Corrigan but different building) allows Maxim and FHM. You will most likely need to set up a subscription and have it sent directly to your LO from the publisher.

InsomniaCT - you are a beacon of hope for me when you post. It's always nice to see your perspective on things to keep my own situation in check. xoxo

Hi! In 2011, DOC banned porn including anything that could be considered "detrimental to security, good order, discipline of the facility" or would "facilitate criminal behavior." A bill was raised maybe two years ago in the General Assembly to allow porn in correctional facilities but it failed to pass. When my boyfriend was in Radgowski in 2012 three books that were sent to him by his sister through Amazon were rejected and they were just books in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy - certainly not porn. So I would stick with books, magazines and newspapers that could not be perceived as sexual or violent. I had subscribed to the Hartford Courant which delivered to the facility and gave him an almost daily delivery of the paper (and for cheap!), and then several books from Amazon. I will caution, though, that a couple of times the sports section of the Courant somehow never made it to my man :-/ But he loved having something new to read every day and it kept him aware of the what is going on in the state and country.
Hope this helps.

I love the suggestion of taking/downloading pictures to send that would only be slightly suggestive. I know it may not be as revealing as the man really wants but it should get through. And I would imagine that something is better than nothing!

How insane that masturbation is prohibited! Certainly there should be rules regarding 'appropriate' times and places and levels of privacy so the act is not used as harassment to others but it is a physical necessity! There was another bill a few years ago that would have allowed an external charge of an inmate that was seen masturbating by a female guard and that charge would require the inmate to file as a sex offender once out in the community! It was absurd!!! A team of COs came to testify at the public hearing but luckily our legislators did not allow that bill to become law.

We all must watch the General Assembly every session to make sure bills are not passed that would further disenfranchise our loved ones! The list of bills in the Judiciary Committee (which must approve any bill impacting criminal justice) can be found by going to the CT General Assembly website, then under Committees clicking on Judiciary. Once on the Judiciary page, click the link on the right for Bill Record Book. There is also currently a bill under consideration in a different committee that would prohibit persons convicted of a felony from working at DSS. Just another employment exclusion to add to the list!
