Thumbs down Whatís the process when someone is taken to the SHU for a weapon?

Hello Everyone,

My LO was placed in the SHU 4 days ago. After the COís searched his cell and took him and his celly to the hole. Because they claim to of found a weapon in the search. Iím just wondering if thereís a process in place that they follow? Or whatís the normal protocol that they go by? Iíve been calling down to the prison, but theyíre screening their calls. And Iím getting no call backs. And the outside support isnít coming fast enough... So Iím reaching out to you guys, with hope that somebody has some answers for me? Iím sick to my stomach..I canít eat or sleep thinking about him. What can I send him in the Shu? What is the worst that can happen? He doesnít even carry weapons. This is in retaliation but God will see us through this bull crap..! 😥😩💯🙏🏽🧠🤦🏽*♀️

I don't know how the investigation and discipline process works but one thing jumped out at me.

First, you're worthwhile and deserve to eat and sleep. Second, you're most effective for your LO if you're fed and rested. Put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others.

He is most likely in the SHU pending the results of an investigation that will take as long to complete as the prison wants it to take. If their findings/suspicions are confirmed, he will receive a formal conduct "shot" and start that process. If he is charged with a serious enough violation (100 or 200 series) he will be scheduled for a DHO (District hearing officer) hearing the next time the DHO comes to his prison. He will receive a written report of the hearing results, and a list of his punishments. He can appeal, but that is usually just a waste of time. The only way he could lose some of his earned good time is as a punishment after a DHO hearing, but if he does, it may be possible for him to have it reinstated in the future.

You can find the maximum punishments for every charged conduct violation near the end of the Victorville A&O Handbook, the inmate rule book.
https://www.bop.gov/locations/instit...aohandbook.pdf

You can only send him books directly from a bookstore or publisher and only if they are shipped through the US Post Office. If his cellie admits that the weapon is his, it may reduce the consequences for your loved one.

Hi,

fbopnomore summed it up well. Just one addition, the books you send him must be softcover. I think he will be able to call you once a month while in the SHU.

Fine Regards

What is SHU? Is that the same as "the hole"? My boyfriend was just put in the hole in county jail for possession of a tattoo gun. When I called BCDC said they wouldn't know how long he will be in the hole until he has his hearing. They didn't tell me when his hearing was though so I have no idea how long that will take.

For the person who wrote this I'd send letters and cards so he has someone to communicate with and something to read.

The SHU is the secure housing unit in federal prisons, the hole to inmates. His jail will determine when his hearing will be held, and what his total punishments will be, so there's no way to predict when that will happen.

Ok thank you so Much! There are so many abbreviations I see that I don't understand so that is why I asked. I just know I miss talking to him every day.

It’s crazy because they are holding my LO in the SHU with no shot.... I’m just so confused. But it’s their world, so they do whatever they want to I guess. My LO has been there five years no trouble at all. And then this bull****. Smh *♀️ It’s all most over so I guess that’s the positive side of things..

He said the living conditions are awful! They are on 24 hour gnats patrol... There’s a huge water leak from the showers. It’s just really bad. I’m praying something happens this week. He has already met with the DHO Officer. So it’s a waiting game.

My second stop in the USP Lewisburg SHU, I saw 3 mice, and told the 2 COs who were "escorting" me, I know those guys, maybe we'll have a welcome back party tonight.

When your rolled up to the SHU an officer bags the mans possessions and they are carefully gone through, itemized and stored in a locker for when the man is released. A man can be in the SHU up to 90 days ongoing during an investigation. However usually they see the DHO within 7 days then they may be seen again the weeks following once all evidence has been gathered. Some call their attorneys and let the DHO know their attorney has advised them to not talk in hearing. In which case they will not ask the man any more questions and let the attorney handle it. Why an attorney? Because if the case could land them more time, take away good time then there is a good reason for outside advice. A weapon I believe is in the same class as murder. I know someone who made the home made wine. They have turned that into a 1 which is treated the same as murder and your points go up and you go back to the USP. And truthfully just having the wine or pruno in the cell is possession whether your aware its there or not. My husband has been places where they put him in a cell and he has found old weapons hid very well in there. He had to find away to dispose of them!!! LOL

I went to see him and he said his celly took the shot so at this time he is being held I. The SHU with no write up. DHO has seen him already and he is still just waiting. It was hard looking at him from behind that glass. Sheesh, I can only imagine what he will look like when he gets out of there. Because heís only on day 20... So I can only imagine what he will look like when he finally gets out of the hole.. 😩💯

Iím praying for him big time! 🤷🏽🙏🏽
