Default Oregon Wildfires And Our Inmates

We are busy working on the next issue of PTO Quarterly and we would love to hear our Oregon members input. Please comment below and tell us what you think!

With all the wildfires popping up in the area, are you for or against our inmates fighting these fires? Why or why not?

Any Oregon Loved Ones fighting these horrible fires this season? I heard a civilian firefighter the other day comment that the inmates really know how to cook good meals on site!

I haven't heard that any were firefighting. There's a camp that does reforestation, it's a minimum, no fence, but has a very small population. Not sure if anyone from there is fighting fires or not though.

My husband is at Warner Creek and he has several friends on the firefighting crew. From what he has told me they are very dedicated to their jobs. Does anyone know if the civilian wildfire companies will hire felons? Seems a waste if they don't because the inmate crews are already fully trained. If they do, that would be a possible good paying job waiting for them.

TLA, is firefighting optional? Do the people on the crews get any incentives to be on the crews? Just curious.

I did not know about this before. If it is a volunteer option and if they get some kind of award for doing it. It is great..but otherwise it is a very dangerous thing to make inmates do with no incentive

No one is forced to be on the fire crew, they can apply for it just like any other prison job. They get paid, I'm not sure how much but I doubt it is a lot. I will ask my husband for more info when he calls and get back to you.

I just found a recent article about the inmate fire crews. Very informative. http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/i...e_fightin.html
