Default August Lightning Series-216 Fires Have Been Reported

Southern California - Current large fires
OSCC - GACC

Ponderosa CA-LPF-2563. This fire started at approximately at 1945 yesterday. As of midnight last night the fire had burned 250+ acres and is 0% contained. The Ponderosa Campground on Forest Road 22S01 has been evacuated.

Knight; CA-STF-002207. The fire is 30% contained after burning 4,050 acres. The fire continues to back towards the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus. Roll-out material and slope continues to be a prime source of interior fire movement. Good progress with line improvement and mop-up was made on the southeast flank of the fire.

Lion; CA-SQF-2139. This Monitor/Confine/Contain wildfire has burned 1,798 acres north of Beach Meadow on the Kern Plateau. They expect 224 acres of interior burning with some single tree torching.

Wildcat; CA-YNP-2968 This fire remains at approximately 450 Incident is burning in Yosemite's rugged wilderness/back-country and there are minimal values that are threatened or at risk. Fire behavior and effects are projected to be beneficial on the landscape. Smoke impacts are projected to minimal to moderate throughout the duration of the incident. Incident is being managed with minimal resources - both on the ground and overhead - with cost containment and adhering to wilderness ethics being key objectives. Incident deployed three wildland fire modules to monitor fire behavior, spread, weather, and smoke production and dispersal. Modules also began to close and guard prominent trails in the area. An attempt was made to deploy a portable repeater due to communication holes in canyon bottoms around fire. Sweep, close and guard the 'Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne' trail and consider adjacent trail closures. Preparations are being completed to evacuate the Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp if necessary. Work closely with air quality regulators and consider deployment of particulate (smoke) monitoring devices in smoke sensitive areas

Default Update: Knight Fire August 3, 2009 7:00 am

County:Tuolumne County
Location:10 miles north of Twain Harte, near Mount Knight on the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River. Administrative Unit:Stanislaus National Forest
Status/Notes:4,594 acres - 40% contained
Date Started:July 26, 2009 3:35 pm
Last update:August 3, 2009 7:00 am

Cause: Under Investigation
Estimated Containment: 30%
Estimated Control: unknown
Estimated Costs: $5,700,000
Injuries: 3
Fuels: Burning in heavy timber/brush
Fire Potential: Extreme
Committed Resources: 1,360 personnel
Personnel: 30 Type I hand crews, 6 Type II hand crews, 10 Helicopters, 4 Air Tankers, 62 Engines, 13 Dozers, 25 Water Tenders, 167 Overhead
Major issues: Steep, rocky inaccessible terrain, extreme fire behavior, active burning throughout night.
Significant events: Fire crews continue to be heavily engaged in suppression efforts on the Knight Fire, located approximately 10 miles north of Twain Harte.
Firefighters are conducting burn-out operations along containment lines to solidify them and hold the fire at bay.
Cooler temperatures and higher humidity levels have allowed firefighters to make good progress with their efforts.
Acreage will continue to increase as the burn-out operations continue moving the fire to the west along the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River.
Mop-up and rehabilitation of control lines continue at the east end of the fire. Contingency line construction is nearing completion for the entire fire.

Heavy smoke will continue to impact many outlying areas, including those as far away as the Sonora Pass and Angels Camp.
