Default Unlawful possession of a firearm... any idea on sentencing?

My boyfriend was charged today with unlawful possession of a firearm. He's currently on probation. I've read that if convicted he will face 2-10 years. His previous convictions are all theft related and non-violent crimes.

My first question is does anyone know what the average sentence is?
Also will he be eligible for parole or does a federal crime mean he will have to serve it all?

I'm 6 months pregnant and all of my family lives in Canada. I'm trying to decide if I should wait for him or go to Canada so that I have a support system, but there are so many variables to consider.

What were the circumstances of his arrest? Was he committing a crime with a firearm when he was arrested, was he carrying on his person, or were they stored securely at his home?

I was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm here in Idaho back in 2003, but since none of my guns were stolen -- they were all bought legitimately through the "gun-show loophole" (private-party purchases) -- and since I wasn't using them in any crime or even carrying them on my person or anything when I was arrested, the Feds decided not to press charges and just let Idaho deal with me instead. I got sentenced to 5-years, with parole eligibility after 1-year. I ended up getting out after 3 years, but violated my parole and ended up having to finish out my sentence.

From what I understand, the Feds abolished parole some time ago, so whatever his sentence is he will have to serve it all locked up, although not necessarily in a medium-security prison, he may be eligible for a camp depending on how much time he actually gets. There is still some confusion as to whether that crime constitutes a "violent" offense or not, for purposes of classification and what not.

You do 85% of Fed time, and you can easily be looking at 10 years, depending on the circumstances.

Hmm 6 months pregnant? If you have no support system where you are now I would say try and look into moving closer to your family. Raising a child is hard, and by yourself is extra hard. Weapons possession is tough especially since he was already in trouble before he will have to do state time mandatory. Just hold in there it will get harder before it gets easier but you need to take care of yourself and that beautiful baby.
