Default Inspections in California prisons for contraband?

Curious, do you know how often they do inspections on inmates/ bunks/ cells etc. in the CA prisons? Are the inspections extensive and thourough? Do they even do them?

It depends. The facility he was in when I first met him was notorious for issues (contraband, threats, drug sales) so they were getting their cells tossed all of the time. Seemed like at least a few times a month. Now? He rarely mentions it. He's been at this one since Oct and it's happened once.

Oh wow! Several times a month sounds insane! My husband said this passed Sunday that someone got caught smoking pot. I guess it just sucks to know that pretty much anything they can score out here can be found in there as well. Just curious as to whether the COs even look out for it.

When they believe there to be something, they'll bring dogs in, use cell phone detectors, tear everything apart. They don't call it "tossing cells" for nothing. My husband never worries about them finding anything, but the clean-up afterward always makes him cranky.

Was he still able to call you on days they inspected? I would be cranky also! I know how crazy they can tear things apart! :/

If they were locked down for the search, then no, no calls. And they would lock them down often because it lessens the chance for someone to get rid of stuff they'd been holding.

Thank you soooo much for that info!!! It helps a lot. I'm curious if that's what's going on with my husband's facility considering they just caught someone this past Sunday guess I'll have to wait and see if he calls

It doesn't have to be that way. When Bernard Kerik ran Rikers Island, he says he ordered officers to put everything back where they found it after a search. The searches still got done, the officers still protected the facility and the inmates against threats to safety and order, but the inmates got a sample of fair treatment from the system.

I don't know how often they did the searches there, which is the OP's question.

That's awesome. Unfortunately that's not something he's experienced.

From all I've read it was an exceptional policy.
