Talking AG Sessions is 'Amazed' that Hawaii is One of the United States

Quote:
“We’ve got cases moving in the very, very liberal Ninth Circuit, who, they’ve been hostile to the order,” AG Sessions said, according to CNN’s KFILE. “We won a case in Virginia recently that was a nicely-written order that just demolished, I thought, all the arguments that some of the other people have been making.”

“We are confident that the President will prevail on appeal and particularly in the Supreme Court, if not the Ninth Circuit,” he continued. “So this is a huge matter. I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the President of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power.”

Sessions was referring to a federal judge in Hawaii, who last month issued a nationwide restraining order against Trump’s immigration ban, which blocked travel from six countries and indefinitely suspended the admission of Syrian refugees.

But, indeed, Mr. Sessions -- it is true.

In fact, Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States of America, having received statehood on August 21, 1959.

Perhaps a little civics lesson is in order.

Um... I have listened to quite a bit of commentary on this and the issue is that a judge so far from the mainland can squash an EO for the mainland.

Well, MrsB, the simple fact of the matter is, Hawaii is just as much of a state as any of the other states that are part of the CONUS. Just because it is "far away" from the rest, doesn't diminish its stature or privilege in any way, shape, or form.

Indeed, a federal judge in Hawaii has just as much authority as a federal judge in any other state to rule that an EO is unconstitutional.

No, I think MrsB's assessment is accurate.

Sessions thinks that because Hawaii is "far away from the mainland" it shouldn't have as much authority as any other state.

Indeed, Sessions seems to think Hawaii is less of a state than the rest.

Had to google it

List of US States By Size:
Rank State Name Square Miles
47 Hawaii 6,423
48 Connecticut 4,845
49 Delaware 1,954
50 Rhode Island 1,045

[just to be mean: Do we know that Sessions actually does think?}

Here we go again I'm afraid. The voters loved W/Cheney/Ashcroft so much that they decided to bring them back for another try.

I don't see it as a claim that he is surprised by Hawaii being a State. His statement is quite accurate...it IS an island and it IS in the Pacific and the judge's action DID interfere with the Executive Order.

None of those three things suggest the manner this thread was titled.

See, here's where the Sessions statement breaks down for me:

He's complaining about a series of islands so far from the WH staying an EO for the entire nation.

Here's my problem- Sessions would expect Hawaii to enforce an EO from DC, just like every other state and territory. But he does not give it credit to stay the EO for not just Hawaii, but for all of the US.

Yes, it's fascinating if you're a stoned college student to think, "man, Hawaii can stop this, Alaska can stop this, at least the judge can. But we can't stop Chuck Grassley, let alone Trump. Freaky."

But Sessions's college days were so long ago (and he's so opposed to marijuana) that he should know better. Hell, he's old enough that he probably protested Hawaii becoming a state.
