Stephan Harper is an idiot. He wants to get "tough on crime" which causes overcrowding, and then closes prisons?!? I'd like to know his genius solution to overcrowding.

My man is in Dorchester. There are hospitality houses near some of the prisons. Dorchester's cost $20/day and $5 less if you don't want meals. Springhill has one too, but I couldn't find any close to Renous....sorry. If I see or hear anything I'll post it.

I recently did a paper for my college course on this exact issue. It seems Bill C-10, also known as the Safe Streets and Communities Act, and the Omnibus Crime Bill is all about privatizing the Canadian prison system.

The GEO Group is the second largest private prison contractor in the U.S., they build, maintain and staff their prisons. They are also an active registered lobbyist group, that deals with several branches of the Canadian Federal Gov., including CSC. The GEO Group was the main lobbyist for Bill C-10. Privatization is all about making money through harsh policies and longer sentences and they actively create market conditions in order to expand their business. Over the years journalists have exposed a long history of violence, abuse, and corruption by this Group.

Kingston Pen and the Leclerc Pen in Laval Quebec are both slated to close within 2 years. The Union of Correctional Officers stated "We know nothing. These closures are hastened decisions".
So I wonder what is the plan, where are they going to put these prisoners from these closures and the new prisoners resulting from Bill C-10.
Vic Toews, our Public Safety Commissioner says an additional 2,700 cells are needed to make up for these closures and the new mandatory sentencing which is part of C-10. He states double bunking will be no problem, but critics disagree. We already have overcrowding, and this will only increase as the mandatory minimum jail sentencing, the end of house arrest, the elimination of conditional sentences, and longer and harsher sentences move through the court system due to C-10.
Though prison privatization has not yet entered public debate, we have not been given an explaination as to what the Governments plan is.

Repuplicans in Texas have warned the 'Harper Government' that they are on the wrong track and doomed to fail. Harper has ignored these warnings. Why? What is in it for him and his Conservative Government? Is it about playing 'Big Shot' to his rich American cronies where he will pad their pockets at the expense of his own country?

We need to fight to get the Parliament of Canada to repeal Bill C-10, in its entirety and to immediately stop the war on Canadians and Canadian Democracy.
