Default JPMorgan Pays Inmates for Fees on Get-Out-of-Jail Debit Card

JPMorgan Pays Inmates for Fees on Get-Out-of-Jail Debit Card

August 2, 2016 — 10:31 AM EDT Updated on August 2, 2016 — 3:17 PM EDT

JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s contract to provide debit cards to inmates released from federal prison may have backfired after a former convict raised a ruckus.
The bank agreed to pay a total of $446,822 to thousands of ex-prisoners to settle a class-action suit claiming JPMorgan ripped them off with $10 fees to withdraw money from a teller window and $2 charges for using non-network ATMs, according to a filing on Monday in federal court in Philadelphia.

Not sure who I hate more the companies that exploit the circumstances around the prison system and use predatory practices or the government that allows it to continue and actually "contracts" with them giving them permission to rob people blind.

Default Class action refund on debit cards issued at parole

I hope this is useful info to some of you out there. Here ▼▼ is the direct link to the article.

JPMorgan Chase Bureau of Prisons Debit Card Fees Settlement

December 27, 2016
A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit about a debit card program operated by JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. for inmates released from correctional facilities of the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP).
In 2008, JPMorgan won a government contract to supply prepaid debit cards to former inmates from all federal prisons in the United States. Under the program, inmates released since May 2012 have received the funds in their inmate trust accounts at the time of release on debit cards issued by Chase.
The former prisoners could then use the cards to withdraw money they had earned or been sent while they were incarcerated.
However, the class action lawsuit led by plaintiff Jesse Krimes, alleges that when inmates were freed and tried to access their money, they were forced to pay fees for ordinary services.
Specifically, Krimes accused Chase of gouging former prisoners with exorbitant fees on debit cards it issued them when they left prison.
