Default Whitey Bulger murdered at USP Hazelton

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 4:16 PM EST

Fellow inmates killed Whitey Bulger, a former Boston mob boss and FBI informer, after he was transferred to a new penitentiary, prison workers said.

Mr. Bulger, 89, had been transferred to the U.S. Penitentiary, Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, W. Va., on Monday and was beaten to death shortly after his arrival

Regardless of anything else-- who beats an 89 year old man to death?
My condolences to the friends and loved ones of Mr. Bulger.

Some thugs wanted to prove how tough they are by beating a frail 89 year old man to death.

Whitey Bulger denied being an informant, even as he insisted he'd had an immunity deal with the former head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Strike Force in New England. Prosecutors countered that with a 700-page file outlining how Bulger provided information on murders, drug deals, armed robberies and criminal fugitives that led to several arrests.

That high of level of government informant, betraying so many of his confederates, is going to have a huge target on his back, no matter how old and frail he is.

What was he doing in general population? He should have been kept in strict isolation the whole time, for his own protection.

I heard something of a statement from prison representatives. Stating that Hazelton is underfunded and understaffed.

That pissed me off. Implying that is the reason and deflecting blame away from them is bad enough. They go further trying to take advantage of and use this murder to try to get more money and hire more "staff". That made their statement reprehensible.

The NY Times is speculating that it might have been a mob hit, I won't be surprised if it was.

I can’t believe he wasn’t in protective custody. Whoever got him is gonna be prison royalty. They could have prevented it, unless the higher ups in the prison we’re paid off by the mob. Interesting

Freddy Geas, eyed in ‘Whitey’ Bulger’s killing, ‘hated rats’

Quote:
Fotios “Freddy” Geas — Mafia hitman, career criminal, prison lifer — did not like informants, and was almost certainly well aware of the fact that Bulger had led a charmed life for a long time as an informant for the FBI.
Quote:
“Freddy hated guys who abused women. Whitey was a rat who killed women. It’s probably that simple,” McDonough said.

Reading more articles about how it all went down, it sounds like he WAS being held in protective custody at all his prior federal prisons.

But apparently Bulger himself requested being transferred to USP Hazelton general population (in the medical wing or annex) for its better access to medical care due to his advancing health issues.

Generally speaking, medical wings or annexes do tend to be much more mellow places to do time compared to the rest of general population, but it probably wouldn't have been too hard for those outside the unit to infiltrate and get to him.

Two men were captured on video surveillance entering his cell at 6AM. It was about two hours later that Bulger was found beaten, with his eyes nearly gouged out, officials said.

My VERY first thought was it was a murder for hire - it was just a matter of time and I’m not the least bit surprised.
