Default 9,500 inmates to be released from california prisons

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California corrections officials say they are adopting new sentencing rules that aim to trim the state prison population by nearly 9,500 inmates after four years.
The regulations released Friday include steps like reducing sentences up to six months for earning a college degree and by up to a month each year for participating in self-help programs like drug counseling.

The bulk of those releases will be early-- this year, next year. They will be violent offenders who have served very lengthy sentences (15+ years). The number estimated to be released is just that, an estimate. Much depends on inmate action and parole board leanings.

This has been the discussion for over 12 months in our Prop 57 threads. Yes, there will be releases. Yes, they will carry weight and bring the population down. But this is happening because CDCR wants the feds to push back from the table and in the process they've been awarded a bigger chunk of responsibility for actual time served by voters.

My hope is this works out in the long run. I'm not worried about folks going to board in the next five years. Show me the stats in 10, 20 years when judges are more heavy handed and DAs incentivized to go big in order to circumvent Good Time and Milestones.

Any reform will be good for someone and I am glad 57 is trying to make a dent. But sentencing reform would have been a better place to start.

Default 924C

Does any of this resentencing have to do with the Demayo case that just won, in regards to the 924c ? If that makes sense..

No, it's not re-sentencing. It's a restructuring of credits by the department of corrections. And it's being challenged, a year later, so we're still not entirely settled on how this will pan out for California state inmates.
