Question What's the deal with 'Special Purchase'?

My husband has told me he can receive a tv, cd/boom box, etc. from a 'Special Purchase' vendor (he was given 3 different store names: Access, Union & another one I can't think of right now).

Has anyone ordered from them? Are they online somewhere or does he have to send me a catalog? Is one better than another?

Any info would be appreciated!

Umm....when I got one for my brother he sent me the order form with what he wanted already marked on the form so's all I had to do was send the form and and a money order into the vendor and they ship it directly to him.

Special Vendor Purchases- Gawd ! Dick Blick .. the paint company what a royal pain in the A$$ - LOL ! The other company you were looking for was WalkenHorst! Asia is correct, the inmate needs to send you the special vendor purchase form/institutional mailing label. No Form affixed, No Package sent!

Good Luck Save , and Happy Shopping !
Hugs !

You're not being nosey, merely curious and that's how we learn!

It's an art-supply catalog. It's terribly, terribly expensive and not even worth it! (nothing to do with prison, just that it's a pain in the @#$ and in the wallet!)

SaveTim - I have done lots of special purchases for James. I like Access much better than Walkenhurst. Mostly because the people are nicer and he gets it quicker. But I never needed to send a form into them. So I think it might depend on which institution he is at. James is at Corcoran and he just gives me the items that he wants and item number, usually over the phone and then I call and order it. For him there is a 4 item limit per package and they have to be shipped together. Here is Access's phone number 1-800-546-6283. I use a credit card (visa or mastercard) to pay for it. Well, I hope this helps.

Hi Lilmama:

Just a little FYI.. if you want to order from Dick Blick.. Your loved one will need a hobby card, and a permission slip from the institution to place orders.. Yep.. here we go round and round- LOL !

Good Luck !

Hi all,
Just thought I'd put my "2 cents" in here.
The special packages are different than art supply stuff...my husband is at Folsom, so maybe it's different. But, if he wants CD players, and stuff like that, he sends me a special package form and it tells you on there what you can send and from whom...it has to be from an approved vendor. As far as his beads and other jewelry making items, he has a hobbie card and can receive items from places like art stores and stuff. I hope this helps.

PS...I use Boders a lot to send my husband his CD's and they usually do a good job. I sent his CD player from Walkenhorst and I liked them as well.

I've never heard of the other ones.
Wendy

Does he have to apply for a hobby card? I want to send Oragami paper & the mailroom said it was ok as long as it was in a sealed packaging (this was in reference to a regular letter, too)

Yes, I think he has to apply for the hobby card, although, I'm not sure with whom...it may be through his religious (if he's got one) affiliation.

I'm not allowed to send my husband any paper without lines...I'm sure it's because they don't want anyone using it for tatoo patterns and stuff like that...in other words, NO art supplies through regular mail. But, every prison is so different!
