Default Bent Correctional Facility

I have a middle-aged family member (by marriage) that just caught a 48 yr sentence and was assigned to Bent. There is not much info on that prison. I would appreciate getting some info…daily life, good/not good characteristics, CO's, available work, etc. Thanks in advance!

Hi, my husband is currently in Bent County Correctional Facility.

They run the place more like a maximum security prison than a medium. Fights and lockdowns are fairly common. Visitation staff is pleasant although strict to the visitation guidelines.

They have a service dog training program though this is not offered to violent offenders or sex offenders.

Other programs include a braille translation program (offered to offenders with 5 or more years with certain education levels) and a truck driving course. Otherwise there are various small jobs for minimal pay (my husband is a GED assistant and gets $20 a month for full time work)

Most jobs are pretty menial such as maintaining bathroom cleanliness, working in the kitchen, etc.

According to the DOC they don't have any in there. However, my husband says that there are a LOT of sick inmates and since Bent County's plan is to put COVID-19 cases in solitary, NOBODY is volunteering the information that they are sick and try to suppress symptoms when they get locked in their cells. Of course, it may not be COVID-19 but rather seasonal flu, but still nobody wants to volunteer that they have anything like COVID-19 symptoms.

Lack of testing does not mean lack of cases unfortunately, as we know from the outside world as well. Other than no visitation it has apparently been business as usual within the walls.

Governor Polis just spoke to this. He did say that "blocks" are being kept within blocks, hence lock down to keep the chance of spreading it down.
