In the path of Hurricane Michael

My loved one is in the direct path of hurricane Michael. The storm exploded unexpectedly to a CAT 4 overnight.

Yesterday he said they boarded up some dorms but not the building he is in.

How do prisons handle these violent storms. How are they kept safe. How is chow handled.

(I put this in general instead of the specific state due to many states being hit by hurricanes in the past)

I'm worried about him.

Hi Friend, I went and moved your post to the *disaster* forum.

Im sure you are very nervous about it. I know if you read the other thread in this forum, they sometimes will evacuate them to other facilities.
Often I think the thinking is......jails/prisons are pretty secure places. Here is to hoping his is as well.

Hopefully someone who knows more about how they handle natural disasters will chime in to help you feel a bit better..

Each prison system handles potential disasters in their own way. Most of the buildings are super strong, so I hope everyone stays safe.

My brother is at Calhoun C.I.We heard from him around 12pm.Havent heard from him since.I am getting worried.I tried to call the prison and the phone is bisy.So which means the lines are down.How fast will they get power back?

I dont think anyone can answer that question. The storm is now and then the damage afterwards in the areas affected will determine how bad it will be. You probably have to ride this out until you hear from him.

It honestly will depend on the damage to the area. my boyfriend is in okaloosa and very little happened there but some wind and rain but by port st joe its a hot mess and power was out very quickly, and they aren't sure when power will be back. so just be patient, trust me I know its hard, last year when a hurricane came over jax we lost power for weeks and other areas were only without for a few hours if that, but they tend to focus on more populated areas first where the impact is greater on numbers. there are a ton of resources on the way there from around the state. and it should be ok here soon. my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time

Sometimes power can be out for weeks, at least that's what happened twice to us on Florida's east coast. They do bring in help from other states, but it's still a process.

Certain places have priority when a storm hits for repairs, Hospitals, Jails, Prisons, Airports are among the first to get power restored. Prisons are built to withstand almost any disaster.

He was extremely fortunate during the hurricane and the immediate aftermath. He was able to email me during the hurricane and was able to make calls by 7 pm. He still has power phone and email. Considering the strength of this storm I think it is amazing.

He said he could see portions of the roof from other buildings blowing about and says the yard is a mess and thinks they will be held in the dorm for a long time while that is getting sorted.

He also said when they went to lunch yesterday they were also give a bagged dinner for last night. Not sure what they did for breakfast today as I haven't heard from him yet today.

He is wondering what is going to happen to the men in the damaged dorms.

Sadly from what I hear from other sites, the area is a mess. Gulf CI is supposedly destroyed with only one dorm left standing. Again I don't know this for a fact and of course the DOC wont confirm or deny. There has been substantial damage to a number of the other prisons on the area as well. I would imagine the DOC is going to be very busy trying to relocate everyone and it will take several days before the locater catches up.

I spoke too soon.... He has now lost the ability to email. But he still has power and phones and is doing well.

my boyfriend called me last night and told me they don't have internet access either. hopefully that's fixed soon.

Found out yesterday that their power is from a generator. It went out for a few hours and they were in the dark. I guess internet will be a while coming.

Hopefully every one stays calm and patient while they are getting cleaned up and repaired. I can't imagine how stressful this is for for inmates and Co's alike.

I live in Gulf County and am still without cable/internet...unless I am lucky enough to get cell service.
