Default SC to spend millions on netting outside prisons to curb smuggling

SC to spend millions on netting outside prisons to curb smuggling

"South Carolina prisons will soon be fitted with netting as a way to prevent contraband from being smuggled inside.

The state’s director of corrections, Bryan Stirling, said the netting is 50 feet above the ground and will cost between $6 million to $7 million to install at all prisons.

The netting won't be able to stop a drone, but it will stop people from throwing bags, phones or other contraband over the walls."

Netting put in place at Ridgeland Correctional Institution to combat contraband

"The South Carolina Department of Corrections announced it will be putting up netting in an effort to combat contraband.

According Bryan Sterling, Director of the Department of Corrections, said access to cell phones allows inmates to coordinate with people outside. Sterling said people are also throwing packages or backpacks over the fence. "

Wow that'a a lot of money to stop contraband from being thrown over a wall. What happens to dirty staff bringing it in? I wish there was data on how contraband makes it in...like percentage from being thrown over fence vs drone vs visit vs staff....but prisons will NEVER admit the amount coming in via staff.
