Default MDC, Los Angeles

Does anyone have any loved ones at MDC, Los Angeles? My husband has been there for about three months. I live in Oakland and will be going there soon with my kids so we can visit. Any info would be helpful. ex: hotels, cabs, etc

Hi

MDC is in downtown LA, around Alameda and Main, a short walking distance from Union Station and historic Olive Street (El Pueblo) and China town. There is a Days Inn close by which is probably the cheapest hotel in the area, and within walking distance of MDC. There are others in the area and they go up in price, there are a few at around $80. The Biltmore is a gorgeous regal hotel around 5th but its in the mid $100 however its worth a look inside, all 19th centuary grandeur, and they have a starbucks. There is a Subway next to the Days Inn and just around the corner and up the street there is a small and cheap Peruvian restaurant. There are also restaurants in the historic El Pueblo and of course ligh snacks in Union Station.
If you like to shop and want some good deals take a cab ride to Santee Alley (everything closes by 6) . The Kids may enjoy it. Its straight down Los Angles Street about ten blocks ( 6-7 minutes) around Olympic.

How are you getting to LA?

I think I will either rent a car or take greyhound. I need to search for prices on airline tix. Not too sure yet. His visits are very short so we will have a lot of free time while we are in L.A. I am new to California and live in Oakland, never been to L.A. I've seen alot of bad things up here in Oakland, so I was just curious about the area by the Detention Center. Also because I will have my kids with me and be alone. It's good to know that everything is close by. About how many blocks is the Days Inn from the Detention Center? His visits are over at 9pm. Is it safe to walk at night? What is Union Station? Is that where the Greyhound would go? Is that within walking distance from the Days Inn? I really appreciate you giving me all this information. I'm sure in the future we will do a whole Disneyland,Magic Mountain, go see Daddy trip. but for now I just want to get there and see what the place is about.

Hi

The Day's Inn is a just a few blocks from the detention center, definately within an easy walking distance. Union Station is the Amtrack depot. I think the Grey Hound station is quite a few blocks away but I believe there is a shuttle service from Union to the Greyhounds station. You can see Union Station from the Days INN. I would suggest you check with Greyhound or maybe the train from Oakland is an option.

I have never been on foot in the area after six o-clock except when there have been festivals at ElPueblo. During the day its no problem, and there are lots of police cars in the area, you are right by the court house. I would think if you are going directly from MDC to the hotel (at night) and you stay on Alameda (about a ten minute walk) you should be ok, however my family would be uncomfortable with me doing that. Perhaps some other PTO member has a better view.

If you rent a car and dont mind driving then there are lots of other options. Cabs in LA are expensive. Its easy to get into downtown from a number of places. The kids may enjoy being at the beach, Venice, Marina Del Ray, and Santa Monica are some good options as its really easy to get into LA and you can avoid the freeway from those locations. Hotels close to the beaches will be expensive this time of year but with a car you could stay a little closer in.

I suggest you post your questions in the California forum. I am sure there are members out there that could offer more insight and help. In the meantime please feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.
