Hardin County inmates earn paychecks while incarcerated

"Hardin County's jailer, Josh Lindblom, keeps a stack of "thank-you" notes tucked into his top desk drawer. They are all from prisoners.

"These inmates are thankful for the opportunity," Lindblom said.

Since May, Lindblom has allowed a select group to join the workforce and earn a paycheck while incarcerated.

"From July 1 to Aug. 1, they will have earned over $40,000, paid over $8,000 in work release fees and over $4,000 in child support," according to Rod Seelye.

The former sheriff in Harrison County, Indiana, Seelye, was instrumental in bringing faith-based and addiction programs into his jail. Now retired, he started Sheriff Staffing Services, partnering businesses with inmates."

That is great to hear. Prison labor was just the subject of a piece done by John Oliver on his show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO).
The greatest travesty is that incarcerated workers are denied the same jobs once released. It is ok to hire them for free/cheap labor as prisoners but not as a paid employee once they're free.
This is worth sharing.
