I'm sorry that you're going through this. The prisons often pile on pain. It's unfortunate that he doesn't have a lawyer. Why doesn't the reporter run a story about all this stone walling? The press and the lawyers can sometimes get things done. Are my letters getting through to him?
Try and remain strong for him and enjoy whatever relationship you can have with your brother. There are many long days ahead so let me know if you need anything.

You must feel very conflicted about this. Know that you will find support here regardless of how this goes. Sending you lots of love.

The Oregon Supreme court anounced today that they will not intervene in Gary;s execution the only other thing that can stop this is the Governer and I don't think he will so it seems to be on for December 5 at 7 pm please pray for him at that time

he's in all of our prayers, honey. i don't have the words to even begin... i have absolutely no idea what you're possibly going through right now, so i'm not even going to attempt to say something that may have any meaning whatsoever. all you can do is take solace in the fact that this is what he wants no matter if we all agree with it or not.

you're in my prayers as well. you need them as much as he does.

A very sad story and I hope and pray he changes his mind as there is always some hope but we must respect his decision.

Gary will not change his mind as time has gone on you can hear in his voice when he calls that he is tired and fust ready to get this over with, it is hard because I would like him alive but I respect his choice,

Default Gary Haugen my brother

Yesterday the Oregon supreme court announced they will not intervene and the execution set for December 6 at 7 pm will go through as long as the Governer does not stop it or Gary changes his mind and I don't think either of those will happen. Now I am on the countdown as to how many days i have to write to him and wait for his phone calls I am worried he has not called or written in over a week and that is not normal for him. I hope all is ok at OSP

My heart goes out to you. I hope the outcome of this is not execution. I can never agree to that kind of 'justice'. I can however understand Gary not wanting to live on death row. If I feel that conflicted, I can't imagine how Gary and his family are all feeling.

I send my love and positive thoughts during this very, very difficult time.

Wow! If only more Governors would stand up for what they believe in. I'll send him a card--I know this isn't what he wanted. If he were treated in a more humane way he'd be okay, I think. Maybe they'll abolish the D/P and he can move back to GP.

The Governer of Oregon just stopped the execution of Gary, this Governer was in office when the last 2 men that were executed in Oregon waived their rights to appeals. Gary is going to fall apart . What a stressed out mess

Default Oregon Gov: No more DP on my watch

Twice, Gov. John Kitzhaber has found himself torn between his physician's oath to do no harm and his governor's oath to uphold the state constitution.

Twice, he chose to swallow his well-known revulsion to the death penalty and enact what he believed to be the will of the people, allowing the 1996 execution of Douglas F. Wright and the 1997 execution of Harry C. Moore to take place.

But 14 years later, as a third inmate volunteered for death, Kitzhaber's personal convictions and frustration with the state's capital punishment system won out.

http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-no...egon_deat.html

BRILLIANT news!! Well done Gov. Kitzhaber.

Even though this was not what he wanted, it's great news for Gary. The main positive that can come out of this is that the dp is stopped and death row closed down for good.

That would be great, but look at Oregon's history regarding the Dp. The Gov said...While he is in office, no more executions! How about the next Gov?
But praying for the best outcome and a next gov who will have the same "balls" as this one. May many follow his example!

"Gov. John Kitzhaber's moratorium on executions while he remains in office triggered an outpouring of support and condemnation Wednesday, but his decision won approval from an unexpected source: death row inmate Gary Haugen, whose request to die spurred the intervention.

The twice-convicted killer praised Kitzhaber for calling attention to problems with the death penalty system. Haugen noted Kitzhaber's criticisms of the death penalty's costs and uneven application in Oregon are the same issues he has repeatedly raised in court appearances and letters.

Read more. It doesn't sound like Gary is upset.

Kitzhaber’s decision to derail Haugen’s execution prompted jaw-dropping reactions.
“It’s pretty incredible,” said Steve Gorham, one of Haugen’s attorneys.
Gorham predicted that Haugen would be shocked and disappointed.

“It’s going to rock his world,” he said.
