My son arrived at San Quentin late last night. He said there are about 80-100 SNY's there, he was housed with another SNY inmate and he already got his property. He said so far all is good there. Thank You Jesus for a smooth transition. At least this is good news, but let us continue praying for our loved ones safety.

Its good to hear that your son arrived safely. I hope things continue to go well. My son was SNY at SCC until a year ago. At that time, they were a level 3. Assuming they still are, its a little unsettling that your son was sent to a programming yard at SQ, especially since were being told it only involves level 1, some 2s, and a few other groups at this point. Im not sure what any of us can expect next.

My son was lowered to Level 2 that is why he was transferred to SQ.

Same message he's had on the CDC site for a while. I was hoping for more.

1. It's not duplicating services. It's the same number of yards, same number of inmates.

2. SNY does work. The issue with SNY gangs is a result of corruption inside CDC. Of course inmates have a choice to participate, but when there is no leadership by example and the structure in which they are placed rewards illicit behaviour, you will have problems. If Mr. Kernan is also intent to remove ineffective staff then we might be addressing a root instead of symptom.

I'm not opposed to voluntary integration. I think there are benefits for those who want to participate. But risking inmate safety should never be an afterthought to a "tough on gangs" approach.

And just a reminder, Mr. Kernan is exiting CDC in August. His investment in the future of SNY and CDC is short-lived. I refer back to my suspicion of his appointment in 2015 noting that Kernan's background is in contract services (aka private investment in incarceration services), not boots on the ground rehabilitation.
