Default Intro - 1_Georgia_Peach from Georgia

Hey everyone! I joined about 3 days ago. I can't believe it has taken me 9.5 years to find ya'll. (lol) I've been going this alone and it's been tough, so I am so glad to be a part of this site. I feel like I have so much to give and hope that I will be able to help others.
Brief bio: my son was arrested in Sept 1998 at age 16 and has been in jail since. He was in YDC for about 6 months and when he turned 17 he was sent to Cobb County for 2 years before he went to trial in 2000. My son was convicted on the premise of being a party to a crime, but in this wonderful state of GA "the acts of one are the acts of all", thus my son received 2 life sentences (felony murder and armed robbery) to be served concurrently. He was first sent to Baldwin for processing and landed in Smith State Prison in Glennville Ga in March of 2001 and that is where he has been since. Laws have changed a lot in Ga and in 1996 they ammended the "minimum before eligibility" on life sentences to 14 years. They changed it again in 2006 I believe and now it is a 30 years minimum before a person is "eligible" for parole. The odds of him making parole in 2012 are very, very slim but there is hope and my son and I are working together to make that happen. Though this is a very negative situation, my son has tried to make it a very positive experience. He was able to test and pass his GED test for a high school diploma and has taken correspondance courses from Ohio State University towards a business degree. It doesn't sound like much but in 2 years he has completed 2 quarters of 3 classes each. There is no rehabilitation in Ga from the state and the inmates are very limited on what they can do. They do have the normal classes they take that are required by every prison, but after that the inmate is on their own. My son has a great attitude and always has a smile on his face. We have great visits. My son will be 26 tomorrow, Valentines Day and I will be visiting with him on Saturday.
I will be visiting the Georgia Forum on a regular basis and will be glad to enlighten you with the limited knowledge I have of the Ga Dept of Corr system.

Thanks to all of you who keep this site alive!

Georgia, you sound so strong. Your son was so young. It's too bad that we are such a vindictive nation. I understand that there are crimes that need serious punishment, but at that age rehabilitation is always a strong possibility.

While you are lending your assistance on the GA forum drop in to the Parents with children in prison. As parents we don't get the option of whether to support our loved one or move on. They are our children for live. People there can at least offer support when you need it.

Hi and welcome to PTO... I'm so glad you found us and don't have to be alone in this anymore... Please do check out the parents with children inside forum on PTO... I'm so sorry this happened to your son and sure hope he IS paroled in 2012 but I've learned parole boards don't usually have a rhyme or reason for who they parole and who they don't... ((hugs))

Deb

im new here to and truly understand these ga laws and how they never work out for the best - the fact that your son is one year younger than me touches me because i have so many friends his age that are going through this - since they were the same age he was - tell him to keep his head up - and his atlanta girls got love for him - keep your head up too!!!

Hello and Welcome to PTO! I'm sorry it took you so long to find us but I know we can provide support for both you and your son. He seems to be doing the time and not letting the time do him. I pray he continues his studies and I know through this he'll do well in whatever he decides to do once this ride is over. May you always be blessed!

Default Re-Intro 1_Georgia_Peach from Georgia

Hey All!

I'm Sharon from Georgia. In 2000, at the age of 18, my son received a life sentence with possible parole in the state of Ga. He actually was arrested at the age of 16 and was in the County jail for 2 years before he went to trial. It has now been a little over 20 years of total incarceration. He has come up for parole twice. This last time (2018) was the hardest on me, because I really thought they would send him to a TC.
It has been 3 years since I last signed on to PrisonTalk. I have a really good friend that I met on this site. Our lives have paralleled each other and we feel each other's emotions because, sadly, we have had the same experiences.
This site was an inspiration and help to me in a time when I needed it and helped me to help others through my experiences. if you have come here looking for encouragement and support, you have come to the right place.

Sharon
