That said being closer to shopping is a good thing. We have a rather expensive store around the corner from us. I dont normally shop there for most of my food, but its close so if I need something, I can walk to it.
The rest of the stores are only a few miles away. (so lucky there)

gaaaaaa car trouble! I am sorry. My son just leased a vehicle due to his old one, having a dying trasmission too. He kept it going (sort of) by adding the fluid often.
Im glad he finally bit the bullet and got a new one. I worried alot with him traveling to work in the old one. He used to pray he didnt have to stop at a red light due to how hard it was for the car to change gears (automatic transmission)
I'm hoping I can keep it going another year I can then buy a new car. I took out a loan to build up credit. Specifically so I can get a bigger loan to buy a decent car. I just have to keep putting transmission fluid in it. I have about a year left on original loan. I should double up on my payments when I can, but I always seem to have something come up.

What to make tonight? what to make.
Maybe cook up some of the steaks hubby got? (that I froze for now)
Chicken again?

We finally finished up the lamb. So Im kinda leaning toward chicken.
But steaks are easier.....

Sometimes figuring out what to make is the hardest part of cooking. lol

Well I ended up not cooking.
I had a good day with my baby sister. She and her hubby are going to be moving up to my county and Im so happy for her. She is currently living in a real dumpy place (In probably the most expensive county in the country)

She is so excited! The place is really nice. Its a bit more than she is paying now, but it has inside laundry! She does not have to lug the laundry up and down stairs.
We drove up there and she paid the deposit, then we saw the place and started a load of laundry (lol)
then drove down to the store to pick up a few things.

I was pretty stoked to find the rice mix I love (cilantro/lime) and this beer I was searching all over for. This same sister and I went up to visit our cousins 2 yrs ago and we stopped at the store to buy beer for the party. I saw Cheladas for the first time and decided to try one. Plus this other beer I thought would be good.
Its a Hefevisen (spelling sorry) but its got a grapfruit twist. Really refreshing and I thought I bet my hub would like it. Could never find it until yesterday!

So pretty stoked to have her up here closer!
One thing that was sobering was the location. Its VERY close to where my hub had to live while he was on parole. Its the place that burned down in the fires of October 2017.
In fact, one of the bldgs at the top of the hill of this apt complex DID burn down.
You can see out the back of her new place, which is on a small hillside.....the burned shrubs/trees.
Chilling.

well I had another good day yesterday. Spent too much money but .....I did end up getting some spices at that spice shop I was talking about. It was great!
You could sample smell them, which I like because Im not that familiar with what smells/tastes like what. So this was helpful for me.

We got a few familiar spices and some new ones. Hub wanted a hot curry spice.

We ended up buying two different kinds. One super spicy and one that was the *house brand blend*
Both smell wonderful!
so we are gonna try them tonight.
(note to self, go buy some more rice!)

I have been ghosting around in this thread because I have no actual cooking to discuss recently, unless you call a very toasted whole-grain english muffin to be a gourmet item.

But you guys are making me want to eat so badly! Jealous, really jealous!

I hope you get to eat better soon, Nim.

I was not so impressed with my meal. Hub and son liked it, but for me? It just didnt hit the mark.
I thought it was ok. lol......hub just told me I did a good job on the curry last night. haha.

Well, at this point, I'm using the thread as a memory jog-er. Remembering tastes, smells, things that I loved. Nice walk down the memory lane in my kitchen.

As I was saying earlier about the spice store. I was so glad we could smell the spices.
It really does make you remember the taste, just from smelling.
They had this dried garlic........I was not going to buy it but wanted to smell it. OMG.
excellent. I did end up buying some.

So trying to think of what to make tonight.
Thinking......maybe something with tortillas (I have corn kind)
Not wanting to extend alot of energy.....so maybe thinking like a taco like lasagna?
Take out some ground beef and cook that up.
Maybe add onions, beans?, cheese (of course)
I have some peppers, both hot and the green kind...green onions and a can of enchilada sauce.

Dont wanna roll up enchiladas, so was thinking of layering?

Look up spanakopita. My favorite with puff pastry. Also, you can wrap brie, honey, nuts and berries in it. Delicious!

Terrible cooking day . .

I have 2 years of saved recipes from magazines, newspapers and web sites. I decided it was time to clean them up. Put the ones I want to keep in a book and toss the others . .

My mom bought a lot of dill but then, has no time to cook w it. I thought it was an opportunity to start my project .

There was a recipe for dill scones I wanted to try.

First batch came out : I don’t like them . And I know my mom will critique me for wasting ingredients when she gets home . . waste is bad cause she lived through a war .

So, I put in the second batch but I burned my arm on the oven door. I jumped !! Parchment paper slid down in to the burner of the oven, it started to smoke, gooey scones follow . . smoking away . . .

I shut off the oven and get this utensil that looks like a devil [ it has a face . . ] to scrape off the dough . Grab some that landed on the oven door and throw them to the floor . . uh oh waste !! Fire alarm went off . That got my parrot squawking . . .

Open the oven door more, open a window, wait for the oven to cool, scrape off the dried / burnt stuff . .

I have 6 scones and need a meal for dinner w dill . Next on the list : creamy tomato soup w dill - cheddar croutons ... I found this recipe on a fashion label ‘s blog. Keep this in mind . . cause it will end up low fat !! Blehhhhh ..

I grinded up dried chickpeas to get some flour for the „ croutons . “ They are glorified crackers . . that taste like soil .

The soup is bland too. It is only onion / garlic / whole tomatoes / s @ p / a shot of balsamic / milk .

Stuck w this „ diet ” soup for a couple days now . Learned my lesson . . .

I treated myself to an instant pot. I had 80 dollars in kohls cash after the holidays!
Anyway, I'm making kielbasa with cabbage and radishes in it right now. I'm starving!

Do you have any turmeric, cumin and such to add to the soup?

You can always freeze the soup if you don't want to wat it today.

O . . . . my . . . . gosh !!!

I made „ the best dish ever ” !!!

My husband’s grand - mother gave me a little book where she & his mom put together his favourite dishes . .

This one looked weird : potatoes mashed with dry cottage cheese, thick yogurt & sour cream . This got added to sautéed onions and half of a [ shredded ] cabbage !!

From this point, you add a couple splashes of vodka + lemon juice, sunflower seeds and dill . .

Coat the top w paprika . . I admit I was scared of it . .

Then bake it . .

It is delicious ! ! well . . Maybe to Eastern European people . .

• I forgot to mention the caraway seeds !!

I made a yummy chicken dish last night. I'd taken out 4 chick breasts and used two the night before (results of that dish were....meh)
But last night was different.

I dont know if you would call it Chicken Alfredo, or Chicken fettichini.
I cut up the chicken into bite size bits then sauteed it til almost done.
took it out of pan. then I browned some minced garlic in the juices and added back the chicken and put it in a casserole dish.

In a separate pot, I cooked some rigatoni noodles, drained them and added some store bought Alfredo sauce and poured that into the chicken.
Then added some shredded mozzarella cheese, mixed that up a bit and baked it for around 20 min. Topped it with some green onions (chopped up)

Came out yummy, garlicky and delish.

Well I found out that even filling your instant pot to the fill line is a bad idea.
OMG!
When I went to vent the pot after it was done, I sprayed hot molten lava gravy all over my kitchen wall, cupboard, papertowel stand, knife stand.
It went on and on for like 3 to 4 min!!!!!!!!!!

What a mess.
But at least the stew was tasty.
