Welcome to Prison Talk. Lockdowns often cause visits to be cancelled with very little prior notice. Travelling a long distance just to be turned away is nasty.

I have visited McCreary several times. I live about 5 hours away and always call before I leave to see if they are on lockdown. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have about visiting.

You can take up to $40 in quarters in clear bags
No sleeveless shirts
Doors open at 8:15 EST
they do have vending machines but they empty quickly and are not filled before the Sunday visiting hours

They use the ion drug scanner to randomly test visitors ,its a wand with a cloth on the end and they use it to swab your hands or sometimes your clothing. If they detect drugs in the swab then you have failed. At some places they allow you to wash your hands and try again.

A positive test can mean a non contact visit or a temporary visit ban.

Many say that its best to avoid handling money , filling your car with gas or wearing lotions or perfumes before your visit as they can affect the result but I amnot sure if that is the case.

Hope your visit goes well.

Is it true that you have to be married to the inmate to visit? My fiancé is gonna be going there and someone said that in order for me to visit we have to be married.

Here is a link to the prison's visiting rules handbook that explains who can visit.
https://www.bop.gov/locations/instit...isit_hours.pdf

If he is a "holdover", visits are limited to immediate family members. If he is designated to McCreary, you should be approved to visit as long as you had a pre=prison relationship.

Once your application has been filed, he will need to ask his bop counselor if you are added to his approved visitor's list.

You can only take quarters. They wand everyone and I've never heard of them letting someone wash their hands and try again if they test positive. I've not heard of them letting a visit behind bars in this case either. You can wear a button down or could when I last visited in May
