Should we contact the ACLU in regards to this latest attack on the already miniscule privileges they have?

Sure.

When publications, etc., are banned by the bop, the publishers usually sue them, and win, but it can take years. I find this latest overreach to be bizarre, and illegal, but they are the same folks who ignore the ADA (disability) and HIPAA (medical) laws, and other laws too.

They made these changes because all of the drugs is coming through the mail room. So instead of them cracking down on the dirty guards who don't "catch" these drugs before hand / and or crack down on the dirty cops that are purposely letting the drugs come in through the mail -they BOP figure they will just punish the inmates INSTEAD OF THE GUARDS. They have a new associate warden that is pushing these new policies.

They have banned books from all external vendors not just Amazon. My guy said if they want a book they have to order from the inside but itís expensive. This is sad because not everyone can afford these prices and thatís why we shop around to see what book company is more convenient for us. The few times my guy was in the SHU, I would just get on Amazon and keep those books going. But now if he goes to the SHU I canít send him books or Sodoku books.

Does anybody have updated info on sending books from a vendor? I think it might be time to get the ACLU or someone involved. My husband is in the SHU, they haven't passed out book vendor order forms and they don't even have a book cart for him to choose crapy books from. It's not his first time in the SHU and they have always had books available to choose from until now. Any suggestions? Any additional info?

Lewisburg USP SHU never had book carts either. Nothing the Victorville staff does surprises me, but it does anger me.

Default Victorville Book Ban

I am working with other advocates to fight BOP's attempts to stop families from sending their loved ones books. There have been attempts at other federal facilities to implement this policy but Victorville seems to be the only place it has gone through. We have a reporter looking into this story but she needs confirmation that the policy is in effect. If anyone has anything in writing they'd be willing to share/send me (email, copy of memo from the Warden, etc.), it would be very helpful. Thanks!

Default Article on Victorville Mail Situation

Attached is an article written by Lauren Gill that appeared in Injustice Today about the BOP's attempt to stop families and friends from sending books to loved ones. It talks about the situation in Victorville specifically. The article is getting some play on social media. I'm hopeful that opposition will begin to grow. Stay strong!

It's no surprise that Victorville was among the first prisons to implement the new books/mail/email "policy"

I have sent a very clear email to my Senator on the Appropriations Committee's Homeland Security subcommittee.

I quoted the Atwater warden's claim about preventing assaults so she can be forewarned about the level of dishonesty she can expect.

There's an interesting question. Those are pretty large markups. Is anyone explaining where the money goes? That might be a good FOIA request.

This and other testimony makes me think General Inch is not really in charge, at least not yet.

That Corrlinks change seems like a natural for the ACLU.

Does this remotely line up with the Program Statement about inmate mail?

This is the committee with direct oversight over the BOP. Check out the member list and see if your Congressperson is on it.

From what I hear, phone calls have more power than email.

The Corrlinks change in particular might be up their alley.

Since General Inch didn't have a clue what he was talking about during his Congressional testimony, I can picture the bop career bureaucrats laughing behind his back while they push through all of their policy changes that were too bizarre for even the prior Directors.

Generals are conditioned to have their orders followed, but that's not how the federal bureaucracy works.

Great ideas!

If anyone contacts their representatives in Congress about this, please ask them to ask the BOP about the money. BOP will sit on a FOIA request for years, but the bureaucrats have to respond to the folks who pay their bills.

Exclamation Washington Post Says Book Policy Out

The Washington Post is reporting that the BOP has rescinded the policy of not allowing family and friends to order books for loved ones. Of course, I won't believe it until your men start actually receiving books. Anyone who has a family member at Victorville, please ask if they have heard about the change.

Fingers crossed this is the real deal.

I hoped all of the blow-back over this awful idea would force the bop to back off. Lets hope it has. Naturally they claim that books sent by families through bookstores or publishers endanger the safety and security of their prisons. Sure they do, and much more expensive books sent by the bop's bookstore/publisher of choice will be safer? BS.

Thank you everyone. I wrote the original post here and I am so grateful for all of your help. Now, if we can get them to be allowed to receive greeting cards again. My husband sent me out a mother's day card which was sweet as they werent letting them send those for awhile. I am going to order a book to see if it goes through.
I am unable to open the PDFs and really missed out reading them. I havent heard from husband for a week from Medium II and not sure if they are on lock down or not but I better start sending mail.
Thank you everyone for your help!

Thumbs up Director Inch is Gone!

BoP Director Inch resigned abruptly a few days ago. The gossip around Washington is that the BoP is going back to the Amazon/Barnes & Noble book shipping policy but everyone recognizes that individual Wardens can always do stupid stuff. Please remain vigilant.

Thanks so much for all your information -- it was critical in getting the BoP to back down.

PS: Sorry if you couldn't access the .pdfs I attached to previous posts. Prisontalk won't let you post a link until you have posted 25 messages. Since I'm a newbie, I was blocked. But given the BoP, I'm sure I'll be eligible soon.

I hadn't heard that the director quit the bop so soon. His actions (more like the actions of other bureaucrats while he was oblivious to what was going on) certainly didn't instill confidence that conditions would improve for the prisoners. Hopefully the next one will do better, but will probably be worse.
