Default J's Poems

My poems, none recent. I'm J.

This one was written in high school after reading Beowulf.

A Warrior's Thoughts

My gold-friend has gone away
Never to return.
He has taken the whale-road,
the great gray vastness.
He boarded the ship,
The ship of no return.
I shall not see him again.
He left his treasures behind,
My gold-friend,
Fought the foe bravely,
Fell defending his warriors,
To his end.

He has left everything to me,
I feel so unworthy.
I am now the gold-friend,
The lord of my people.
But how shall I lead?
How shall I fight?

I have been given the example,
My gold-friend was the example.
I shall lead with mercy and justice,
Wisdom, knowledge, and integrity.
I shall fight bravely,
Defending my warriors,
And if it comes in battle,
Meet my end.

It will come, certainly,
Sooner or later,
Be it in war or peace,
It will come.

Then a new gold-friend will emerge,
A new lord.
He will defend the warriors,
And this story will go on and on.

This one was written in 2002 after M left my life after moving away in 2000. He went to jail in 2002 and his parents told me that he was dead in 2003 (they lied.) I wouldn't find out about him being in prison until 2010.

Remembrance

The time has come and gone
Bringing remembrance of you
Music fills my head and I remember
Time we have spent together.
The laughter we’ve shared
Things we’ve talked about.
All are just memories now.
And each time I remember you
I try to see your face, hear your voice,
But all in vain.
Your face is becoming dim in my memory.
Your voice I cannot now recall.
I strive to remember,
But I’m forgetting, my friend.
Please, forgive me.
For all I have is remembrance.

And the one I wrote in 2016 after I saw him again for the first time since he moved away:

Reunion

Sixteen years have come and gone
Bringing remembrance of you
Music fills my head and I remember
Time we have spent together.
The laughter we’ve shared
Things we’ve talked about.
We have more than memories now.
And each time I think of you
I see your face, I hear your voice
They are mine forever now.
Your face is fresh in my memory
Your voice I can easily recall.
I no longer strive to remember
For I have you near
No longer just my friend, you are my lover.
Our reunion is forevermore.
