Default Jail ditches letters for electronic messages. Video instead of visits

Seminole County Jail ditches letters for electronic messages. Video calls to take place of inmate visits.

Seminole County Jail inmates can no longer handle letters or pictures mailed by family and friends as a new system requires those incarcerated to view digital copies of their messages.

Under an agreement between the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and Smart Communications Holding Inc., a Tampa-based company, the jail also plans to replace all in-person visits at the jail with a video-visitation system.

Expect this to spread like wildfire...unless defeated in court, though I'm not up-to-date on if any part of this new policy is currently being challenged. Other states have implemented similar mail policies, and I'm sure the visitation policy will soon follow.

Not sure how I feel about mail but I'm hoping when hubby goes in he is at a place (federal) that does video visits even if it is close. Not sure how I'd feel about ONLY video visits though to be fair.

This is horrible and totally not fair to anyone....not the inmates and not the families. All this is doing is isolating the inmates from their families. Who is coming up with this crap? Huh!!!

Sounds illegal! Your LO needs to have the experience of feeling you in their arms & vice versa. Could be all that keeps them together.

Polk has had only video visits for a long time. You have to go to the jail to do the video visit and they limit them to only 2 per week.

They are allowed mail, but no pictures. Or at least they were 2 years ago.
