Multiple prisoners report swelling and nerve damage from intentionally over-tightened restraints applied to punish them for refusing to share a cell with someone dangerously violent.

28 Days in Chains
In this federal prison, inmates have a choice: live with a violent cellmate or end up in shackles.

On Feb. 3, 2011, corrections officers at Lewisburg federal penitentiary in rural Pennsylvania arrived outside Sebastian Richardson’s cell door. With them was a man looking agitated and rocking back and forth. He stared down at Richardson, who at 4 feet, 11 inches was nicknamed “Bam Bam.”

There's a petition drive for an investigation by the Attorney General. It's being run by another site, and I'm not sure whether the rules allow me to post about them.

Anyone curious about the BOP official response, it's at http://www.npr.org/2016/10/27/499632...-investigation

Bureau Of Prisons Responds To NPR/Marshall Project Investigation

October 27, 20163:41 PM ET

The following text is a response from Justin Long of the Office of Public Affairs at the Federal Bureau of Prisons after NPR and The Marshall Project published the investigation, "Inside Lewisburg Prison: A Choice Between A Violent Cellmate Or Shackles."

The Bureau is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all inmates in our population, our staff, and the public. Humane treatment of the men and women in our custody is a top priority, and our staff work to provide a wide range of evidence-based programs to assist inmates in our custody to release to our communities as law-abiding citizens. We demand from our staff uncompromising ethical conduct that respects the value and dignity of the men and women in all of our prisons nationwide. We take very seriously every allegation of misconduct, referring these allegations for investigation to our Office of Internal Affairs or to the Department of Justice's Office of the Inspector General. Our track record demonstrates that when our staff are found guilty of misconduct we take firm action.
