Default Washington State Penitentiary (WSP)

Washington State Penitentiary

1313 N. 13th

Walla Walla, WA 99362

509-525-3610

From the WA DOC web site: http://www.doc.wa.gov/

The Washington State Penitentiary has four facilities within the institution, each established to house different custody levels of offenders.
The Washington State Penitentiary is the largest correctional institution in the state. It has the operational capacity of 1825 offenders and currently has approximately 2,240 offenders. It has approximately 906 employees, 506 are in uniform. There are 96 different staff job classifications.

The financial impact on the local area for the fiscal year of 1997 was approximately $44,526,825, which included salaries, medical services, utilities, and local purchases.

The average cost to house an offender at WSP is $61.24 per day and $22,353 per year.

MAIN INSTITUTION

The Main Institution primarily houses offenders with Close custody level, which is the second highest custody level. It can currently house 1280 offenders.

Units 1 and 4 are the Segregation unit which houses offenders who violate the institution rules or who have been placed on Administrative Segregation status. Unit 5 is also called the Special Housing Unit. It houses 245 offenders and has three different types of offenders; protective custody, out-patient mental health offenders, and some of the Offenders Sentenced to the Death Penalty. Units 6 and 8 are the largest housing units, each with a capacity of 408 offenders. They have 102 four man cells located on three levels. Unit 7 houses 180 offenders. All offenders in Unit 7 are required to have a job.

Recreation: The Offender Activity Center contains a gym, weight lifting room, music room, library, and a legal library. There is a hobby craft building for recreational craft activities that require electric tools and a large amount of space. The Big Yard is a five acre field surrounded by tall solid walls and is used for outside recreation and exercise.

The Food Service Department has two dining areas that can each feed 450+ offenders. It prepares 225,000 meals per month at a cost of ninety six cents per meal for food and $5.10 for food, supplies, and labor.

The institution hospital provides medical, dental and mental health services for the institution. It also has a pharmacy and optical office.

Walla Walla Community College provides educational opportunities for high school completion, GED, and some vocational skills, and has approximately 1,556 part and full-time students.

Religious services are provided by two full time ordained clergy and over 400 volunteers. Recognized religious needs are provided through private services, and group ceremonies for all faiths, with over 220 separate religious programs per month.

The institution TV station, KWSP, is an important communication link between the administration and the offenders. It also creates quality video productions for training and information utilized by the institution and the Department of Corrections.

Correctional Industries provides jobs for offenders. It contains a metal plant that makes lockers, chair frames, footlockers, and other metal furnishings, a welding shop, and the license plate factory for the state.

The Engineer Department maintains all of the buildings, machinery, and some construction for the institution. The Laundry provides work for offenders cleaning state-owned laundry and linens, including uniforms.

MEDIUM SECURITY COMPLEX (MSC)

MSC can currently house approximately 840 offenders. It is surrounded by a double chain link fence. This complex houses Medium custody offenders and primarily has two man cells.

There are four housing units: Blue Mountain, Adams, Baker, and Rainier.

There is also a recreation area with an outside yard, gymnasium and hobby/craft area. MSC also has a chapel, outpatient medical services, dental office, food service area, library, legal library, and education area.

Correctional Industries provides offender work opportunities in a mattress factory and a garment factory that makes offender clothing, staff uniforms, and uniform clothing for other state agencies. The sign shop makes roadside signs for the state as well as other types of signs.

MINIMUM SECURITY UNIT (MSU)

The Minimum Security Unit houses 174 Minimum custody offenders who are assigned jobs to maintain the grounds, work in the warehouse, automotive repair shop, greenhouse, field crops, feed lot, engineers shop, and heifer farm. A crew of offenders also work off of the institutional grounds under the supervision of correctional staff.

The kitchen garden grows vegetables for use in meal preparation, and the surplus is donated to local area food banks.

There is also a carpentry program through the Walla Walla Community College located at MSU.

INTENSIVE MANAGEMENT UNIT (IMU)

IMU is a maximum custody unit that is located outside the Main Institution and has the capacity of 96 offenders. It houses those offenders who represent a risk to the orderly operation of the unit, a threat toward themselves or others, and Offenders Sentenced to the Death Penalty.

The offenders are normally only out of their single cells for an hour of exercise per day. These offenders do not come into direct contact with other offenders.

Default Visiting WSP Closed Security

I can answer some questions about closed security....

First off there is no reason for you to be scared. The most important advice I can give you is to make sure that you wear the right clothes.

Jeans that are not too tight are a must. If you can't grab an eatra inch on either side of you hips then they are too tight.

Wear a darker color tee shirt to start out with. Make sure it is long enough so that when you raise your arms up in the air your belly won't show.

No hair ornaments...just a simple hair tie is allowed

Shoes must be worn with socks or nylons.....

You may take in $10.00 in change for each visitor. One key only just bring a ziplock baggie to put your stuff in.

Visiting starts at 9:30 AM show your ID to the Gate house officer and he will motion for you to move along.

When you get into the main institution you will need to fill a a visitors form and then get in line, now there are two different lines so make sure you are in the main institution visiting line. Most of the women up there are really helpful and will answer any questions you may have.

Just remember to be respectful to the CO's and you will be alright. If you have anymore questions just let me know, I am happy to help out.....and by the way....welcome to pto!!!

I forgot to add that there is a limit to the amount of jewlery you can wear.....two rings per hand...two earrings per ear, two bracelets, and absolutely no belly, tongue, nose rings.

Also make sure that you don't wear any sports club clothing or clothing that has alcohol logos or anything of that nature.

No Underwire bras EVER!

Can't wear those cute fuzzy lined boots in either.

Thats all very good information to post. Another thing I'd mention, since I have visited at WSP for closed security is don't wear things or g-strings. They had an issue with that back when I was visiting there, before Jay got sent to Nevada.

Thank you Stacy....I never even thought of that!! Also make sure to wear pantyhose with dresses. Nylons won't work.

Hi all. For those who visit at the Medium Security Complex at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, there have been some changes in the visiting schedule.
Both BMU and the BAR units are allowed to visit every Monday and Tuesday for the full day session. The weekend visiting will stay the same, alternating between BMU and BAR units.
The changes are effective immediately!!!!!

Thumbs down

Is there updated information available? The last was posted several years ago!

Particularly updated information about motels, hotels, and rates would be appreciated.
