Default BOP will arm guards with pepper spray

Oh - this is a great idea...what are they thinking???

US Bureau of Prisons to arm some guards with pepper spray

BY MICHAEL DOYLE
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
WASHINGTON -- Corrections officers at U.S. Penitentiary Atwater in California and six other tension-racked federal prisons now will be armed with pepper spray, prompted in part by a 2008 murder that still haunts a California court.

Urged on by lawmakers, U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials are training selected officers to use the spray canisters that can drop a violent inmate from up to 12 feet away. Although described as a "pilot program" that will formally start in several weeks, the decision marks a policy shift for officials who until now have warned against the dangers of arming prison guards.

All I can think of is that cop in Berkeley pepper spraying the passive protesters with people taking photos. Think of some idiot prison guard trying to do that to inmates - with no photographers around - and whether inmates are going to just sit there and take it....
I once had a cop tell me that, when someone has pepper spray, nine times out of ten the wrong person gets sprayed with it. And then there's the issue of appropriate and immediate medical treatment of the person who was sprayed. Like that'll happen.

They are also installing lethal fences at some of the prisons. I can see pepper spray helping with a large scale battle, but I can also picture someone gassing an inmate for fun.

Oh, some of the county jails on the East Coast already have given the guards pepper spray.

I have an LO in county right now, every time there's a fight they spray. If the guys are in the day room, it spreads all over.

One of the inmates is doing a pro se lawsuit right now because of the after effects of being sprayed for an incident he wasn't even involved in.

And recently, a NY State Senator proposed giving tasers to...wait for it...bus drivers! I don't think that particular proposal is going to happen but you sure don't have to be wearing a tin foil hat to see which way the wind is blowing.

lol yeah, the school bus drivers might have a legitimate need for some type of crowd control (J/K) but no, this proposal was for regular city bus drivers.

Will inmates get pepper sprayed for rolling their eyes at a guard?
