Default Pekin Illinois Federal Prison Camp changing from Women's to a Men's camp

Has anyone heard this or can anyone verify? I have a friend at pekin who sent me an email. She said they were told this at a camp meeting this week and that the move for women will begin in April 2011. I live very near Pekin and have heard nothing about this

Yep - it's true.

Prison moving female inmates

By Ken Harris
Pekin Daily Times
Posted Feb 18, 2011 @ 08:00 AM

PEKIN, Ill. —
Some 300 female inmates in the Federal Correctional Institution-Pekin will be relocated this spring as the minimum security facility will be filled with all male prisoners.

FCI-Pekin consists of two separate facilities that house inmates, a medium security facility that houses about 1,200 male prisoners and a minimum security facility that houses about 300 female prisoners, according to Jay Henderson, FCI-Pekin executive assistant.

According to Henderson, the 300 female inmates will be transferred to other facilities this spring and they will be replaced by male inmates per a decision by the federal Bureau of Prisons executive committee.

Bureau Spokesman Chris Burke said Thursday the move is about economically catering to a shift in the prison demographic that needs the services of the prison system’s in-house treatment program for inmates with drug problems, which is called RDAP for Residential Drug Abuse Program.

The minimum security facility at FCI-Pekin, which is individually labelled Federal Prison Camp-Pekin, is on of the select facilities that provides this program.

“Over the last couple of years we’ve experienced an increase of males needing to utilize the RDAP program,” Burke said. “At the same time there has been a decrease of females. We do have two other facilities in that region for females that need the RDAP program.”

so much for that being just a rumor. I'll give it this much - I heard it on PTO before it even hit the media

It always takes a bit of the edge off of joy over your own circumstance when you recognize that it's at someone else's expense. But be joyful nonetheless - life is too short to be otherwise.

Pekin transferred a bunch of women out to Greenville a few weeks ago and this week sent another bunch of women to Coleman in Florida. Greenville was basically women waiting for RDAP.

I found this stating that it is one of the facilities that does offer the complete program:

Most of the BOP facilities have some form of drug abuse treatment, these locations are the only locations providing the complete RDAP. These programs, if successfully completed, provide up to a one year reduction in sentences pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 3621(e).

The full list is here.

Hope this is helpful.

Well he is in florence colorado prison camp and i'm in missouri, and some agent from the camp told him that some of the inmates are going to be transfered, so i think the BOP know that his family is in missouri, and i guess that's the reason they are going to change my husband, but they ask to my husband first if he want's to be tranfered.

Does any body know how the pekin camp building is?
That is becouse my husband like i said before is in florence colorado, and that place is not that bad to spend you time in prison, but in may he is going to be transfered to pekin, and i'm concerned abouth it, ....to be in prisson is a hard time like i'm seeing with my husband, and if the place is horrible then the time spend in prison is worse.

I can tell you that the prison is in a "nice" area. It looks "inviting", as is inviting as a prison can I suppose.

As far as what's on the inside, I can't tell you that.

Here's a picture you can look at as well as all of the other information...just click on this link.

I found this article titled the Warden's Tour.

An article titled "Visit To A Federal Prison".

Here's another article based on the women's view. Pekin use to house women.

Pekin Community Service program.

A not so nice article.

I did not stumble upon anything specifically written from former inmates in my brief search.

I hope that these are somewhat helpful to you.

MM
