Default Amazon Ban/Update: Amazon OK 8/18/2017

I have received letters from 2 separate inmates at SVSP telling me Amazon is being banned from their prison. To expect the books I have ordered to be returned. Barnes and Noble. Usedbooks.com or Thriftbooks.com are vendors I may need to consider.

Has anyone else heard of this? ( Not that I don't trust their word but prison rumors are worse than preteen gossip)

And this was the real wrench in the works.--> " You can send hardback books" to them ? wow.

I'm glad you posted this! I meant to last week and it slipped my mind.

Yes, they (not just SV, but to my knowledge CDCR) have banned Amazon shipments. They've given the reason that Amazon uses third party sellers which means that Amazon, specifically, isn't responsible for the content of the package.

I didn't hear the hardback part, but...go figure.

It's unfortunate because the options just went way down and the cost just went up. :/

Yeah, Amazon allows selfpublishers - so basically someone can write a book for their husband or their inmate and Amazon (kindle) would print and send it to the prisons.. I guess they got hipped to it because I sent my husband some books and they said he could either pay to mail it to me, destroy it or send it back to the book company... :/ bummer cause Amazon had fast shipping and a great selection. :/

I learned this recently too, I didn't know it effected all California prisons though. The book I ordered Sean recently got sent back but the seller didn't tell me so I had to email Amazon and get a refund.

Wow!!! How awful. You would think they would just require Amazon only products. It's sad that they have to cancel them completely. I mean it clearly says if it's from Amazon or not on the box.

I thought the same thing. When you order, you know if you're ordering from Amazon or a third party and you can request that Amazon include a gift receipt. It's overzealous and lazy to restrict all Amazon orders.

Exactly!!! The epitome of laziness. I totally get the third party ban; it is what it is. But don't deny an entire company.

Arizona denies Amazon, too. They have been doing that for the last few years. It seems that they can't distinguish what is being sold and shipped from Amazon directly, and what is from a third party.

That's the whole thing, you can. If it comes from an Amazon warehouse it has Amazon & their address. If you got it from Bob's bookstore on Amazon's website, it has Bob's as the return address. It's pretty easy.

Not for cdcr.
Nothing is ever easy.
I tried looking at the cdcr website to see if it included anything about this.
I couldnt find it.
If anyone can or gets the info (what *section of the DOM its located in.....) post it here please.

Shoot. That explains things.

I sent 3 books a couple weeks ago and they got to the prison - Soledad - per USPS tracking. I assumed all was fine. Thursday Amazon sends an email saying their vendor is shipping 3 new replacement books and "apologize for them being received damaged. I was perplexed that Soledad would do that. My son told me mailroom notifies him if books are unacceptable content. These were 3 books from Stephen Kings gunslinger series so we figured that was not the problem.

Apparently Soledad shipped them back to the Amazon vendor! I bet charging my sons account. With no information for the Amazon vendor to know why. They interpret as damaged. Here we go again. USPS says replacement shipment will be received tomorrow. Probably will get sent back again. With no explanation. And charge my son's account again.

Such ^&^#%$ imbeciles work at CDCR. They do this, no notification. In furtherance of their brainless laziness they get on a shipping merry-go-round rather than simply notify the inmate.

Wow.

I have been sending a couple of books from Amazon to my LO in CA but they have to be paperback and not hard cover. Until now they have not been refused. But I do make sure they are "pure" Amazon products. If the value is high they may not go through either. Just know that here and then inmates get their belongings "lost" or stohlen, and, sadly, books rank high in these categories.

That's such B.S.! Sorry that you and your son are going through that. Seems like just another way to waste our money that we put on our LO's books. My baby's been in county since January and I've spent roughly 1k on the phone calls alone. Talk about highway robbery!

I think this policy went into effect in the last month. My husband told me two weeks ago that he learned about it through his job. I would ask your LO to verify if they can still receive from Amazon before ordering more.

I ordered from Amazon back in June and it was denied. My cousin actually sent me the denial form so I could see for myself. Sidewalker I will tell you the code in a little while when I can get to the form.

This is the kind of issue that an ombudsman office ought to be good at. If anyone tries that please let us know how it went.

Nothing will come of it and the ban will stand cause as usual bad apples spoil the bunch. People were ordering TVs and Jordan's that were hundreds of dollars a pair so they shut it down plain n simple

I tried to take a pic of my disapproval letter but it's too big to post. So the letter I have reads:

Amazon Package (Temporary Suspension Amazon Svc)
Per CCR, Title 15, Section 3133 a departmentally approved vendor is any publisher, bookstore, or book distributor that does mail order business; Amazon does not meet policy standard

Thanks for posting!

I know for a while some facilities have been refusing Amazon (the company, not third party) deliveries because they had stopped putting packing slips in the package. I thought this was part of their decision, although it's possible to request a receipt when you place the order.

Ah........the old Policy Standard crap.
thank you for trying to post and then including the wordage.
Well this just stinks to high heaven.

One would THINK that they would make some sort of announcement. someplace.
(like their stupid cdcr website that is so unhelpful)
Instead, lets keep it a secret and let folks waste time and money trying to send things that before were fine but now are off limits.
(sorry, this really pisses me off.....the total lack of communication and well.....I just cant right now)

Can I send books to an inmate?
CCR Title 15 Section 3134.1 covers the mailing in of books. Books must be soft covered and sent from a departmentally approved book distributor, book store or publisher. Additional information may be located in DOM, Chapter 5, Section 54010.8.
Books must be sent in directly from a book distributor.

Inmates may have only 10 books in their possession. When they receive new books, they must turn in their old ones. These old books must be donated or sent home at the inmate's expense. Most inmates donate their books to the library, etc.

Most families use Barnes and Noble or one of the other departmentally approved vendors. A departmentally approved vendor is any publisher, book store, or book distributor that does mail order business. Please note that Amazon is no longer a departmentally approved vendor for books. If you are having a book sent in from a college or some other non-traditional book distributor, please check with the prison first.

I emailed Amazon customer service yesterday. Of course they don't know anything about it. Amazon assured that if anything was returned, like what appeared to happen with us, Amazon pays all shipping. Free replacement books from Amazon arrived at prison yesterday. Sounds unlikely those will be accepted.

Amazon customer service is great. Paying for replacements and shipping back and forth. Even though they did nothing wrong. I'll miss using them if they are not approved anymore - permanently.

I'm going to call mail room tomorrow and see what they say.

I actually feel bad for Amazon (as much as one can feel for a corporation). They're fulfilling their obligation and having to foot the bill for a somewhat arbitrary decision by CDCR. They'll catch on soon if the numbers of returns from Cali creep up.

I got through to the mailroom at Soledad today. She told me that they received a memo regarding Amazon from the Warden. I asked when? She said, it was new, just a few weeks ago.

Memo said that because Amazon is a 3rd party vendor they cannot receive books from them anymore. She was not sure if this was permanent policy or temporary.

I asked, since memo is from your Warden is this a prison by prison policy or is it a CDCR wide policy? Unfortunately she did not know.

She said that inmates were supposed to be notified. We all know how well that works. She also said inmates can ask their MAC(?) rep who can provide details. Whatever a MAC rep is...
