Default Anyone been in Cook County Jail in Illinois? Questions?

I have court at the end of the month and there is a chance I could end up in Cook County Jail. I pretty much know most of the things I need to know about being there but I had a few questions?

What is the dress code? I have really long hair, do you they make you cut it off? If so, how much? Do they supply underwear and bras or do you have to buy it from the commissary? Can you wear your own shoes if they don't have laces?

What is the food like? Can you even survive on it? I have heard that it is really really bad, but how bad are we talking? I have also heard that their food causes terrible constipation. Is that true?

Do they give you your medication? I am on medical and psych drugs, how would that be handled?

If you can't or don't have time to answer them all please answer whichever ones you can. Thank you in advance!

Hello and welcome to PTO!

No, they will not make you cut your hair.

Yes, you can survive on the food. Might not be quite to your liking but you won't starve. You're not going to be in long enough to order and receive commissary, but you'll be fine.

I was in a ky county facility and, no, they do not provide bras or panties. For a few days, you can handle it. Illinois may be different, but I doubt it for a few days stay.

As for meds....call ahead and ask if you can turn your script in to Medical, otherwise there will not be time for them to order your meds.

Breathe!! Its only a few days

Are you absolutely SURE they will not make you cut your hair because I talked to a cop at the Cook County Sherrifs office and he said that they would but people have been telling me he was just being a jerk because of the way he said it. I want to be SURE if you could tell me please do, it is driving me crazy.

I am actually considering skipping my court date because of it. Seriously.

OMG...don't miss your court date. Suck it up and show up. County jails do not make you cut your hair (male or female). The ony time I've heard of hair-cutting is when an inmate (male) goes to prison (Classification & Reception).

if there's any chance that you may avoid county, or get work release or something like that, do NOT FTA. You'll just get an absconding charge on top of whatever you were going to get, plus the Court won't be lenient and will sentence you much more harshly than it would have had you complied.

As for meds - talk with your attorney. Sign the appropriate HIPAA forms, and talk with the jail so that they can have your meds on hand. Be prepared for the fact that they will probably not allow you to take benzos and the like in jail.

It's jail. It sucks, but it's just jail. It's large and noisy, but it's just county jail. If you want to go the prison route, FTA.

You will not have to cut your hair. It's jail, not the Army. If you are going to be there for an extended period, you will be issued "County Gear". DOC scrubs and a pair of karate shoes. Your clothes will be stored. After 30 days, your property may be moved to the CPD Warehouse in order to make room.
