So frustrated. I sat on hold for FOUR HOURS today with no luck. Is this normal?? I'm approved for visits and I desperately want to visit. My heart is so sad. I'm discouraged at the thought that I could try this for weeks and never get a visit.

My bf is in reception still.

Are you sure you were on-hold in the hold-que? The telephone system is horribly notorious for not working. If I call from my landline, it rings until being disconnected. If I call from my cellular, it never gets disconnected. Oddly, I have better luck calling from my cellular vs my landline.

Yay so i got approved to visit my boyfriend who is in reception (: Now i have tons of questions on the process.. What number do you call for appoinments (reception)? What time do you call? What about dress code? Any restriction on what and what on to wear? What can you and can not bring? Upon arriving whats it like? Do you have to park in a specific spot? What the process? Sorry for all the questions, this will be my first time and im extremely nevous/excited to see him. Any help would help.

Just had my first reception visit today. Here's my experience:

Call 415-455-5022 a week before you want to go. Stay on hold!

Once you have your appointment, come 30+ min before. My appointment was at 9:30 and they started calling 9:30 appointments at 9. One at a time. There's two lines - mainline and reception. Reception is closer to the gate and mainline is closer to the prison.

Lockers are right next to those lines. Don't take anything else in. They call you in, check ID, look at your clothes. You will be asked to leave if you violate any of the rules. No jeans, no blue, no faded black, no tan/green combos, no orange, no white shirts. No metal of any kind. I wore black slacks with an elastic waistband, a purple t shirt, no undershirt, a sports bra, and a gray sweater and had no issues. They give you a pass and you go through security. Metal detector.
Then you walk. Follow the yellow line for what feels like forever. It will lead you to a red brick building. Go in and wait for the gate to open. They take your ID and your pass and hold them until your visit is over.

Go in to the left for reception. Walk until you see your inmate. The speakers suck. I got in at 9:15 and he arrived at 9:30 on the dot. They let us talk for 1hr15min!!!

It was my first visit and it was so great to see him and also- so so so much harder than I thought it would be.

The parking lot for visitors is pretty clearly marked. It slopes downward but still its marked pretty good.
For reception visit they are non contact. Inmates are in a small holding cell on one side (alone) and visitors on the other. There is a chair there for you to sit, but I couldnt hear from the speaker thingy on the wall because it was too far away for me. So I had to squat on the seat. (feet on the seat bottom) or stand and bend down. UG.

Also you cant layer a top. Like you cant wear a tank top with another shirt over it.
You can wear a jacket I think.
Bra. NO WIRE.
Your best bet is to wear black. (not faded)
If some item of your clothing isnt acceptable, you can go to the Friends Outside house. Its a steep walk (I'd walk because the streets are quite narrow and parking might be hard. They have approved clothing you can borrow for the visit.
Dont be afraid to ask others waiting in line if you are in the right line. Most are very helpful. There IS a restroom available to use before you get to your visit.
They do have lockers available but I forget how much it costs I think it was 50 cents to store a purse. It seems to me there used to be a limit on how much money you can bring in, but I do know I had to put my ten dollar bill in the change machine (I'd forgotten I even had it in my pocket) so I ended up with ten bucks in quarters.
So limit how much you bring. (hopefully someone with more current experience can chime in)
Its been a long time now since I visited there.
The phone calling SUCKED for me to try to get thru for a visit. I only managed to get two visits before he left for his mainline prison. And that was over a 13 month time frame. Yeah. I could only visit on Sundays and you needed to call a week in advance.
Every Sunday for over a yr. For two hrs. Every time.
I hope that part is better now.

more like if you are going to a funeral.
Its worth it tho to see your loved one. They wont be as interested in what you are wearing as you are tho. They just want to see YOU.

Default San Quentin reception visiting question

I just got a letter from my son that I am approved to visit him. He is in reception at San Quentin. Been all over their website, called their number even. Can't get a live person even tried during the day when most places are open.

What is my next step once I find out I am approved. Obviously I'm desperate to visit!!! Any help is appreciated!!!
