Default Do they tell the inmates? -- commissary

Do they tell the inmates how much money they have on their books? Do they inform them when someone puts money on their books? I am always writing Ernest letting him know I put money on his books just to make sure he knows, I have heard from some people that no they don't and some that yes they do. So which is it? lol

They are supposed to get a monthly statement (Robin always did) but others here have posted that it was not happening in their case.

They used to get a monthly statement just like a bank account, but they don't anymore. Well, he doesn't. The only way he knows someone put money in is because I write and tell him. He does get a receipt everytime he goes to commisary that tells him his remaining balance.

Gene tells me that they tell him how much he has on his books but not who put it on there. He knows it was me because I tell him and because I am the only one who does. When I put money on his brother's books he always tells me to write him and let him know it was me so that he doesn't think it was his girlfriend.

Unless you tell them, they don't know until they get to commissary window. If they have ordered more than they have the money to pay for, the last things on the list get cut. I always try to let my son know when and how much I send.

Here's what my hubby does when he isn't sure how much money he has on his books. He will shoot off an I60 requesting intigent mail supplies. They have to check the inmates books to see if they have money or not. If the inmate does have money then they will send the inmate back a note saying "you do not qualify you have X amount of money on your books."

He says this keeps him from going and standing in the commissary line only to find out he can't buy anything because he doesn't have any money. Maybe that is an idea you can pass on to your loved one.

Karen

My husband does get a "monthly statement" but it doesn't get to him until about the middle of the next month. So it's not much use as far as gauging how much money they have if any deposits have been made. The "statement" that they get does list the initials of the person who made the deposit and the initials of the method in which it was deposited, ie WU = Western Union. That's the only one I can attest to since that's how I put his money in and that's how it showed up on the statements he's sent me. He also said that when he was in GP he could stand in line and they would swipe his ID and tell him how much he had and he would just get out of line and pick out what he wanted and got back in line. They do not check ahead now that he is in Seg.

My hubby gets a monthly statement but that doesn't help him in knowing if there is money AT THE TIME he is going to commissary so I always write and tell him when money has been put on his books. And if they aren't sure if there is money they can always write and ask and wait to go to what they call "stuck out".

My son also gets a monthly statement, and he knows that I've got him set up on auto-deposit every Tuesday, so that he can calculate how much he should have. The receipts they get after the spend also show the balance after spend. I'm told that they can get a balance *before* the spend, but that counts as a spend and then they will be turned away. The I-60 request for indigent pack is a great idea! Thanks.

Thank you everyone for all of your responses, they are greatly appreciated. I didn't know if they told them or not, I know I put 30 on there and he didn't even know it until I said something. I usually tell him that I put money on his books but sometimes forget to, guess I will need to keep track of letting him know that I put it on there. I just got into contact with Ernest's mom and found out sometimes she sends him 25 I wonder if he has money sitting in there that he doesn't know about..lol.. Guess when he is released he will get a surprise..lol..

thanks!

My husband gets his monthly statement and with that info it says when money was sent, who sent it and his ending balance. My husband just told me that last week.

You do not have to ask him about it to be able to put money in his ITF account. All you need to know is his name and TDCJ number. I don't know if you mean that you want to do it anonymously but there will be some sort of identification of who made the deposit on his statment. I guess it depends on how you send the money on how clear that identification is. I know if you go through jpay, for instance, the statement comes out with the name on the credit card used to perform the transaction. It never crossed my mind before but it seems you could send a money order with an alias filled in on it since that information isn't necessary for it to be cashed.

When I pay with J Pay I print an extra copy and send it to my son so he will know how much I have sent to him.

Where my wife is at she gets a receipt that shows her balance every week.
