AB1211 - http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...01920200AB1211.

Assemblymember Reyes introduced it last year at start of 2019/2020 sessions. She never developed language for the bill, just a statement of intent. Looks like firefighters union didn't like it. She put it back to committee a week or two ago but basically let it die. She floated an idea, that's about all.

A good idea. Clearly helpful to former inmates. Helps California. Potentially saves the state money. Potentially good for statewide firefighting efforts and public safety taking advantage of the training these people have already received.

Appears to have buckled under political pressure from a powerful union. Imagine that.....

I figured the outcome would be that....not flying.
Its really (to me) rather sad. I personally know a kid (tho he's not now) who got into trouble as a minor (I believe) he had wanted to be a firefighter and long story short, he couldnt be due to his trouble. (the trouble was not for drugs or anything other than being a dumb kid)
I felt bad for him, but he's doing ok for himself.
He'd have been a good fit for that job.

Default New California law to make it easier for former inmate firefighters to turn

New California law to make it easier for former inmate firefighters to turn pro

OAKLAND, Calif.—"Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new bill Friday that will accelerate the process for expunging the felony records of formerly incarcerated volunteer firefighters.

The new law is designed to make it far easier for them to earn an emergency medical technician certification, the first step in becoming a professional firefighter in most cities and counties.

For decades, thousands of inmate firefighters have battled wildfires across the state, working alongside professional firefighters in the scorching heat and smoke."

Default New Ca law to make it easier for former inmate firefighters to turn pro

This decades-old system would undergo a significant change if Gov. Gavin Newsom signs a proposed bill, AB 2147, that would accelerate the process for expunging their records, making it easier for them to earn an emergency medical technician certification, the first step in becoming a professional firefighter in most cities and counties.

Former inmates have to disclose on applications for EMT programs and jobs whether they have been convicted of a felony. With the record eliminated, they could be considered as any other applicant. Some former inmates convicted of violent offenses, including arson, kidnapping, and rape would be barred from having their records expunged.

Default Newsom signs bill to allow ex-inmates to become firefighters

Amid a smoke-filled backdrop, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday to allow inmate firefighters to clear their criminal records so they can take steps to become firefighters as wildfires continue to rage throughout the state.

The bill, AB 2147, expedites the process for inmates to clear their records so they can earn a certificate with the intention of obtaining a position in a fire department. The legislation will give people "on the front lines" hope, Newsom said before the signing.

Default Newsom signs bill eliminating barriers that prevent former inmate firefight

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday aimed at eliminating barriers that prevent former inmate fire crews from pursuing careers as firefighters once they have served their prison time.

Nonviolent offenders who have fought fires as members of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation fire camps will now be able to have their records expunged, allowing them to seek employment and further firefighting training, according to the governor’s office.

“This legislation rights a historic wrong and recognizes the sacrifice of thousands of incarcerated people who have helped battle wildfires in our state, and I would like to thank the Legislature for passing this bill,” Newsom said.

Previously, released inmates were often denied jobs at fire departments because of their felony records. Now, formerly incarcerated individuals will be able to file a petition in county court to expunge their records and waive parole time.
